What are the responsibilities and job description for the Painter I, 2nd Shift (TKM111) position at Trail King BU?
Objective of Position: Prepares and finishes metal surfaces of trailers in preparation for painting process.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Follows surface preparation specifications on trailers and accessories.
- Follows supervisor/assistant supervisor’s instructions.
- Uses blasting equipment to remove rust, carbon, mill scale and weld spatter. May be required to use buffers and chippers etc. to clean hard to reach areas.
- Handles and utilizes all material used in the blast areas in a safe manner.
- Applies primer and topcoat to trailers
- Repairs paint on trailers
- Operates overhead crane in a safe manner.
- Is familiar with all equipment used and is responsible for routine maintenance and upkeep.
- Advises supervisor of any problems with sandblasting equipment or trailers.
- Monitors supplies needed in area and updates supervisor as necessary.
- Carefully prepares trailers for blasting or painting, by masking off key components on the trailer that are not blasted or painted.
- Handles, stores and disposes of all hazardous materials properly. Successfully completes annual training.
- Follow standard work and procedures.
- Must adhere to all safety standard set by the company.
- Performs axle alignments and adjusts brakes as directed.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

- Possess basic computer skills.
- Possess the ability to accurately read a measuring tape.
- Possess the ability to read and follow instructions
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
- Ability to work up to a 12 hour shift.
- Able to wear personal protective equipment while performing job functions.
- Must be willing to fluctuate hours to accommodate needs
- While performing duties of job, employee is required to: stand, kneel, walk, sit, climb, bend, and twist; use hands to finger, handle and feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear.
- Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to changes in temperature and humidity, exposure to dust, fumes and is near moving machinery.
- Successfully perform a Pulmonary Function Test and be able to utilize a respirator while operating blasting equipment.
- Upon initial assignment to an area where hazardous waste will be handled, training of management of hazardous waste must be conducted within six months of start date
- Annual training is required for management of hazardous waste including a review of the company contingency plan
