The Town of Westborough Department of Public Works seeks applications from energetic,
team-oriented individuals for the full-time position of Maintenance Craftsperson I (Forestry/
Tree Division). Position is primarily focused on removal and planting of town trees. Essential
functions of the position include tree trimming, tree cutting, chipping, and planting. The
position requires availability for on-call duties during inclement weather events and other
emergencies including snow and tree removal.
To be considered for higher end wage range, applicants must possess a Massachusetts CDL
Class B and Massachusetts Hoisting License for Backhoe/Front End Loader.
The anticipated hiring range is $23.69 – $28.19 (full range to $32.66) Benefits include 13 paid
holidays, 2 weeks of vacation at start, sick days, and various stipends.

Summary: Performs various types of manual labor related to the construction, maintenance, operation
and repair of town infrastructure, facilities, buildings, grounds, and equipment by performing the
following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be

The duties and responsibilities performed by employees classified in this position will require the
employee to work across multiple divisions within the Department of Public Works.
Performs routine and repetitive tasks with work checked during progress and upon completion for
satisfactory performance.
Performs manual work in digging and in backfilling excavations; handles heavy materials on
construction, maintenance and repair projects; assists in pipe laying, road patching, cleaning of storm
sewers and catch basins, cleaving and roding of sanitary sewers, or any phase of public works
maintenance.
Performs on-call duties during weather events and other emergencies including snow and tree removal
and water main break reparations.
Performs basic landscaping functions. This may include ground man duties in tree trimming, removal
programs with respect to leading branches and debris, and mowing.
Performs rough handyman work in painting or similar activities; may participate in custodial duties.
Performs daily visual checks of vehicle or equipment used and alerts Master Mechanic if maintenance is
needed.
Participates in other public works operations as needed including but not limited to cemetery operations,
highway repairs, snow removal and salt/sand operations, tree operations and seasonal responsibilities
including but not limited to setting up for town events, mowing, leaf and rubbish collection, and field
and/or building maintenance.
Operates public works heavy equipment of moderate complexity for all public works projects.
Operates a variety of public works equipment for all public works projects including specialized tools
such as jack hammers, paving breakers, power mowers and spraying apparatus in performing tasks which
are basically manual operations.

Performs maintenance and construction to the water and sewer infrastructure. Installs, maintains and
repairs hydrants, valves, transmission lines, water meters, hauls gravel, dirt, sand, and other materials;
loads and unloads materials; performs manual labor incidental to the work of operating assigned
equipment; services and maintains equipment.
Performs maintenance and repair of sewer lift stations including but not limited to checking station
pumps, flowmeters, bubblers and floats, wet well cleaning.
Operates vehicles and equipment for snow and ice control work; plows, sands and salts sidewalks; plows
municipal parking lots and school yards. Shovels and plows snow and removes ice and snow from walks,
steps, drives and pavements; assists motor equipment operators in sanding and/or salting programs.
Hauls gravel, dirt, sand, and other materials; loads and unloads materials; performs manual labor
incidental to the work of operating assigned equipment; services and maintains equipment.
Performs highway department maintenance and repair including but not limited to building, repairing, and
patching streets, highways and sidewalks, repairing and installation of structures, installing and repairing
guard rails, fencing and signs, trimming brush, and painting lines on roads and parking lots and general
landscaping.
Performs emergency highway repairs and other public works related emergency repairs as required.
May participate in other public works operations as needed including but not limited to cemetery
operations, highway repairs, snow removal and salt/sand operations, tree operations and seasonal
responsibilities including but not limited to setting up for town events, mowing, leaf and rubbish
collection, field and/or building maintenance and water and sewer maintenance and repair.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This job has no supervisory responsibilities.
Education and/or Experience: High school diploma or equivalent; three to five years of experience in
public works and/or construction and maintenance activities; or any equivalent combination of education
and experience.
Language Skills: Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and
small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical Skills: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and
interpret bar graphs.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in
written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in
standardized situations.
Computer Skills: May be required to have basic computer skills.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Must possess a CDL; Tanker endorsement preferred. Must have Massachusetts Hoisting License for
Backhoe/ Front End Loader.
Other Skills and Abilities: Ability to use hand tools and operate power equipment.
