The Town of Natick is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Heavy Equipment Operator within the Department of Public Works. This position performs skilled and semi-skilled work in the operation of heavy and specialized equipment, as well as related manual tasks in support of highway, grounds, and infrastructure maintenance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
- Operates heavy and specialized equipment such as front-end loaders, backhoes, excavators, dump trucks, street sweepers, and snow removal equipment.
- Performs excavation, grading, road repair, drainage work, and related DPW maintenance tasks.
- Conducts routine equipment inspections and basic preventative maintenance; reports needed repairs.
- Assists crews with manual labor duties, including paving, grounds work, catch basin cleaning, and sign installation.
- Participates in seasonal operations including snow plowing, sanding, leaf collection, and storm-related emergency response.
- Works collaboratively with the Foreman, General Foreman, and department staff; interacts professionally with residents and contractors.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum of Three (3) years of experience in heavy equipment operation, preferably within public works or construction.
- Valid Massachusetts Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with air brake endorsement required; Class A CDL preferred.
- Hoisting Engineer License (2B minimum) issued by the Commonwealth of Massachusetts required.
- Ability to perform strenuous physical labor and work in all weather conditions.
- Strong communication skills and the ability to follow written and verbal instructions.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with municipal public works operations.
- Knowledge of roadway, drainage, and utility construction practices.
- Snow and ice control experience.
Physical Requirements
Work includes frequent standing, bending, lifting up to 50 lbs., operating equipment for extended periods, and working outdoors in varying environmental conditions.
Hours & Compensation
This is a full-time, unionized position (40 hours per week) with opportunities for overtime, including snow and emergency response. Salary and benefits are in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement. The full pay range is $25.9324 – $34.5100 per hour, with annual step increases as outlined in the union contract.
