Position Summary
We are seeking an experienced Mold / Melt Supervisor to lead daily operations within a high-volume automotive manufacturing environment. This role is responsible for supervising production personnel, driving safety, quality, and productivity initiatives, and ensuring efficient operation of mold and melt processes to meet customer and plant performance goals. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in foundry, casting, melt, or molding operations, along with strong leadership skills and a proven ability to improve processes, develop teams, and maintain production standards in a fast-paced manufacturing setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise and coordinate daily activities of employees within the molding and/or melt department in an automotive manufacturing facility.
- Lead shift operations to ensure production schedules, quality standards, scrap targets, and throughput goals are achieved.
- Monitor and manage melt operations, including furnace performance, metal handling, charge materials, chemistry, temperature control, and pour practices as applicable.
- Oversee molding operations, including sand systems, mold line performance, core handling, mold quality, and process consistency.
- Enforce plant safety policies and procedures while promoting a strong safety-first culture across the department.
- Coach, train, and develop hourly team members to improve performance, accountability, and technical knowledge.
- Troubleshoot process, equipment, and personnel issues to minimize downtime and maintain production flow.
- Partner with maintenance, quality, engineering, and production planning teams to resolve operational issues and improve performance.
- Monitor KPI performance including safety, scrap, rework, downtime, efficiency, labor utilization, and schedule attainment.
- Ensure compliance with quality standards, customer requirements, and internal operating procedures.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on productivity, cost reduction, waste elimination, and process stability.
- Complete shift reports, production documentation, attendance tracking, disciplinary documentation, and other supervisory records as needed.
- Support inventory control and material flow for raw materials, alloys, sand, cores, and finished castings as required.
- Maintain staffing levels and assign labor appropriately to support production demands.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, Metallurgy, or related field preferred.
- 3 years of supervisory experience in a foundry, melt, molding, casting, or heavy manufacturing environment; automotive experience strongly preferred.
- Strong knowledge of melt operations, molding processes, casting production, furnaces, metal chemistry, and/or sand systems.
- Experience leading teams in a fast-paced manufacturing environment with a strong focus on safety, quality, and productivity.
- Ability to troubleshoot production issues and make sound decisions under pressure.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing, continuous improvement, and root cause problem-solving methods.
- Strong communication, leadership, and employee coaching skills.
- Proficient with production reporting, Microsoft Office, and manufacturing systems/ERP platforms as needed.
- Willingness to work off-shift, overtime, weekends, or flexible schedules as business needs require.
Preferred Experience
- Automotive foundry or casting experience
- Iron, steel, aluminum, or other molten metal processing experience
- Sand molding, permanent mold, die casting, or related molding process knowledge
- Experience with KPI tracking, labor management, and shift-based production leadership
- Background in quality systems, corrective actions, and process improvement initiatives
