Job Description:

The Special Education Teacher provides individualized instruction and educational support to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Working collaboratively with Education Assistants, related service providers, families, and interdisciplinary team members, the teacher develops and implements instructional programs that promote academic achievement, functional life skills, communication, social-emotional growth, and independence. This position plays a critical role in creating a safe, engaging, and inclusive learning environment where every student can succeed.

Essential Duties:

  • Develop and implement individualized instruction aligned with each student's Individualized Education Program (IEP).
  • Teach academic, vocational, functional, and life skills based on student needs and developmental levels.
  • Create and maintain lesson plans, classroom schedules, instructional materials, and educational supports.
  • Supervise and provide direction to Education Assistants within the classroom setting.
  • Monitor, document, and evaluate student progress toward IEP goals and objectives.
  • Implement behavior support strategies and individualized intervention plans.
  • Maintain compliance with all educational documentation, confidentiality requirements, and state regulations.
  • Participate in IEP meetings, family conferences, multidisciplinary team meetings, and school events.
  • Administer required assessments and state-mandated testing.
  • Foster a positive, structured, and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student success.
  • Collaborate with therapists, behavior specialists, nurses, families, and other educational professionals to support student growth.
  • Assist students with feeding, toileting, and personal care needs as required.
  • Participate in staff training, professional development, and ongoing certification requirements.
  • Support regulatory reviews, audits, inspections, and accreditation processes as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Must possess or be eligible to obtain a Maryland Educator License in Special Education.
  • Experience teaching students with intellectual and developmental disabilities preferred.
  • Experience working with elementary and/or middle school students preferred.
  • Strong classroom management, communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement individualized instructional strategies and behavior support plans.
  • Must be a minimum of 21 years old.
  • Must provide proof of authorization to work in the U.S.
  • Must pass pre-employment drug screening, criminal background checks (CJIS/Family Law Article 5-561), and CPS clearance.
  • If driving is required, must possess a valid driver's license in good standing and meet insurability requirements.
  • Must be able to perform Safety-Care physical interventions, except for approved temporary or minimal restrictions authorized by the Behavior Department.
