Summary
The Senior Staff Attorney is responsible for contract negotiations and review, and collaboration and support of internal stakeholders by independently providing legal advice on a wide array of legal, strategic, operational, governance, business, regulatory, and litigation matters, while aligning with the objectives of the organization.
Qualifications & Education
- Bachelor’s degree and JD from an accredited law school; admitted and in good standing to practice law in New York
- A minimum seven years experience as a practicing attorney representing banks, lenders, and/or financial institutions
- Comprehensive understanding of banking laws, estate planning and administration, consumer lending and consumer collections required
- Highly organized, ethical, and self-motivated with the ability to prioritize, meet deadlines, and collaborate effectively
- Ability to exercise seasoned legal judgment
- Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision
- Ability to effectively collaborate across teams while maintaining full accountability of work product quality, timely deliverables, and results
- Ability to understand and interpret state and federal laws and regulations across all fifty states relevant to credit unions, banks, consumer lending, and general business operations in the financial services industry
- Excellent legal research, analysis, and communication skills (oral and written); Microsoft 365 proficiency preferred
Job Duties
- Reviews, revises, and negotiates contracts
- Researches and interprets existing laws and regulations, and anticipated changes to laws, and provides guidance for informed decisions and reduce risk
- Conducts comprehensive legal research and provide expert analysis and guidance on matters relating to nationwide operations, title reports, deeds, UCC filings, collections, bankruptcy, foreclosure, and regulatory compliance
- Provides timely responses to legal inquiries from branches, member services, and the contact center regarding account documentation, powers of attorney, trusts, estates, and other member issues
- Interprets and reviews legal documents such as court orders, judgments, and guardianship papers for compliance with laws and internal policies
- Researches and advises on federal and state banking regulations, including TILA, FCRA, and ECOA, and communicate regulatory updates to stakeholders.
- Drafts, reviews, and negotiates contracts, NDAs, leases, templates; assist with litigation, discovery, and dispute resolution/avoidance
- Provides legal advice in support of lending initiatives, retail and banking/financial services, regulatory compliance matters, litigation, BSA/AML, internal investigations, and other legal guidance impacting the organization
- Creates and modernizes templates, presentations, letters, responses, settlement documents, confidentiality agreements, resolutions, and affidavits
- Represents the Legal Department on projects, presentations, trainings, committees, and meetings, and support other assignments and initiatives
- Performs other duties as needed upon request by immediate supervisor

The good faith range for this position is $138,750 - $173,500 annually. This range is an estimate based on potential employee qualifications and operational needs. The salary may vary above and below the stated amounts, as permitted by applicable law.
All candidates will be subject to a background check, credit check, and drug test to determine employment eligibility.
