Job Overview
A national electrical engineering consulting firm is seeking an experienced Traveling Field Protection Engineer to support critical utility and substation projects across the U.S. This high-travel, field-focused role operates on a 3-weeks-on, 1-week-off rotation. You’ll lead the design, testing, commissioning, and optimization of protection and control schemes that ensure grid reliability and safety.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, configure, and commission substation protection and control systems (distribution and transmission level)
- Test and troubleshoot protective relays, SCADA equipment, and communication protocols
- Develop and review logic diagrams, one-line drawings, and wiring schematics
- Conduct site visits for installation support, system testing, and commissioning
- Coordinate with field crews, contractors, and utilities to ensure successful project delivery
- Provide technical guidance and QA/QC for protection settings, control panel layouts, and interlocks
- Ensure compliance with NERC, IEEE, and utility-specific standards
- Produce technical documentation and detailed test reports
- Support system upgrades and retrofits for evolving grid requirements
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field required
- Minimum 6 years of experience in Protection & Control engineering
- Strong understanding of protective relays, IEDs, and SCADA protocols (DNP3, Modbus)
- Experience commissioning SEL, GE, ABB, or similar relay platforms
- Proficiency with relay software (e.g., SEL AcSELerator) and Microsoft Office
- Ability to travel 100% on a 3-weeks-on, 1-week-off rotation
- Strong technical writing, problem-solving, and team collaboration skills
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record
Preferred:
- Field commissioning experience
- Exposure to both greenfield and brownfield substation projects
