We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting function for a complex, multi-entity organization with significant real estate development and investment activity. This is a hands-on leadership role with responsibility for financial reporting, accounting operations, budgeting, audit oversight, internal controls, and the continued development of accounting processes and systems.

About the Role:

The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in real estate accounting, preferably within a real estate development environment, along with experience managing accounting across multiple entities. Candidates from property accounting or corporate accounting roles within real estate organizations will also be considered.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead and oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end and year-end close, account reconciliations, financial reporting, and internal controls.
  • Manage accounting and financial reporting across a complex multi-entity structure, including entity-level reporting, intercompany activity, consolidations, and project-specific entities.
  • Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP and applicable accounting requirements.
  • Oversee accounting related to real estate development, properties, projects, and related investment entities, including entities with varying ownership and capital structures.
  • Lead and support the annual budgeting and forecasting process, partnering with leadership and operational teams to develop budgets, analyze performance, and identify meaningful variances.
  • Provide financial analysis and insight to senior leadership to support business planning, project evaluation, and strategic decision-making.
  • Lead, supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff while establishing clear expectations, accountability, and effective workflows.
  • Coordinate the annual audit process and serve as a key point of contact for external auditors.
  • Strengthen accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and reporting processes to improve accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
  • Partner across the organization to ensure financial information is accurate, accessible, and effectively used in decision-making.
  • Develop familiarity with nonprofit-specific accounting, funding structures, government financing programs, and tax credit programs relevant to the organization.

Key Requirements:

  • 7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, with a strong preference for experience within real estate development, property accounting, real estate investment, or corporate accounting for a real estate organization.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP and experience overseeing core accounting operations, financial reporting, and the close process.
  • Demonstrated experience working within a multi-entity accounting environment, including consolidations, intercompany transactions, and entity-level financial reporting.
  • Prior experience supervising, managing, or developing accounting staff.
  • Hands-on experience with budgeting, forecasting, and budget-to-actual analysis.
  • Experience supporting or managing annual financial statement audits and working directly with external auditors.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to understand complex transactions, entity structures, and financial relationships.
  • Ability to operate as a hands-on accounting leader while also serving as a trusted financial partner to senior leadership.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.

Desirable Skills:

  • Accounting experience within a real estate development organization, particularly involving multiple projects, properties, or legal entities.
  • Experience with real estate investment structures, project-level accounting, development accounting, or complex capital structures.
  • Exposure to investment- or project-level financial models and the ability to understand the accounting implications of real estate transactions and investments.
  • Experience with Yardi or another real estate-focused accounting/ERP platform.
  • Experience improving accounting processes, implementing controls, or helping build and scale an accounting function.
  • Nonprofit or fund accounting experience is helpful but not required.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required).
  • Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license (preferred but not required).
  • Advanced degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business (preferred but not required).
