We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead the accounting function for a complex, multi-entity organization with significant real estate development and investment activity. This is a hands-on leadership role with responsibility for financial reporting, accounting operations, budgeting, audit oversight, internal controls, and the continued development of accounting processes and systems.
About the Role:
The ideal candidate brings a strong foundation in real estate accounting, preferably within a real estate development environment, along with experience managing accounting across multiple entities. Candidates from property accounting or corporate accounting roles within real estate organizations will also be considered.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, month-end and year-end close, account reconciliations, financial reporting, and internal controls.
- Manage accounting and financial reporting across a complex multi-entity structure, including entity-level reporting, intercompany activity, consolidations, and project-specific entities.
- Ensure accurate and timely preparation of financial statements in accordance with GAAP and applicable accounting requirements.
- Oversee accounting related to real estate development, properties, projects, and related investment entities, including entities with varying ownership and capital structures.
- Lead and support the annual budgeting and forecasting process, partnering with leadership and operational teams to develop budgets, analyze performance, and identify meaningful variances.
- Provide financial analysis and insight to senior leadership to support business planning, project evaluation, and strategic decision-making.
- Lead, supervise, mentor, and develop accounting staff while establishing clear expectations, accountability, and effective workflows.
- Coordinate the annual audit process and serve as a key point of contact for external auditors.
- Strengthen accounting policies, procedures, internal controls, and reporting processes to improve accuracy, efficiency, and scalability.
- Partner across the organization to ensure financial information is accurate, accessible, and effectively used in decision-making.
- Develop familiarity with nonprofit-specific accounting, funding structures, government financing programs, and tax credit programs relevant to the organization.
Key Requirements:
- 7 years of progressively responsible accounting experience, with a strong preference for experience within real estate development, property accounting, real estate investment, or corporate accounting for a real estate organization.
- Strong understanding of GAAP and experience overseeing core accounting operations, financial reporting, and the close process.
- Demonstrated experience working within a multi-entity accounting environment, including consolidations, intercompany transactions, and entity-level financial reporting.
- Prior experience supervising, managing, or developing accounting staff.
- Hands-on experience with budgeting, forecasting, and budget-to-actual analysis.
- Experience supporting or managing annual financial statement audits and working directly with external auditors.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to understand complex transactions, entity structures, and financial relationships.
- Ability to operate as a hands-on accounting leader while also serving as a trusted financial partner to senior leadership.
- Strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
Desirable Skills:
- Accounting experience within a real estate development organization, particularly involving multiple projects, properties, or legal entities.
- Experience with real estate investment structures, project-level accounting, development accounting, or complex capital structures.
- Exposure to investment- or project-level financial models and the ability to understand the accounting implications of real estate transactions and investments.
- Experience with Yardi or another real estate-focused accounting/ERP platform.
- Experience improving accounting processes, implementing controls, or helping build and scale an accounting function.
- Nonprofit or fund accounting experience is helpful but not required.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (required).
- Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license (preferred but not required).
- Advanced degree in Accounting, Finance, or Business (preferred but not required).
Salary : $130,000 - $145,000
