Our challenge
We are seeking an experienced ETL Test Lead to lead the testing efforts for enterprise data integration, data warehouse, and business intelligence projects. The ideal candidate will have strong expertise in ETL testing, database validation, data quality assurance, and test leadership, with the ability to manage end-to-end testing activities across complex data pipelines.
The ETL Test Lead will be responsible for defining test strategy, creating test plans, coordinating with cross-functional teams, validating source-to-target mappings, and ensuring the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of data across systems. This role requires hands-on experience with ETL tools, SQL, data warehousing concepts, and test automation frameworks.

The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors.
In accordance with law, the base salary for this role if filled within Piscataway, NJ is $90K - $100K/year & benefits (see below).
Responsibilities:
Test Leadership & Planning
- Lead the ETL testing team and manage daily test activities across multiple data projects.
- Define and implement the ETL testing strategy, test plan, and test approach.
- Review business requirements, source-to-target mapping documents, and technical design specifications.
- Estimate testing effort, allocate resources, and track progress against milestones.
- Coordinate with project managers, developers, business analysts, data architects, and stakeholders.
ETL & Data Validation
- Validate data extraction, transformation, and loading processes across source and target systems.
- Perform source-to-target data validation and reconciliation testing.
- Verify data completeness, accuracy, consistency, and integrity in data warehouse/data mart environments.
- Validate transformation rules, business logic, aggregations, and calculations.
- Perform backend testing using SQL queries on relational and non-relational databases.
- Ensure proper handling of duplicates, null values, truncation, data type mismatches, and rejected records.
Test Design & Execution
- Design detailed test scenarios, test cases, and test scripts for ETL workflows.
- Execute functional, regression, integration, system, and end-to-end testing for data pipelines.
- Conduct data quality testing, batch validation, and report/dashboard data verification.
- Validate scheduling, job dependencies, and workflow orchestration.
- Perform negative testing, boundary testing, and exception handling validation.
Defect Management & Reporting
- Identify, log, track, and manage defects through resolution.
- Work closely with development teams to reproduce issues and validate fixes.
- Prepare daily/weekly status reports, test summary reports, and quality metrics.
- Communicate testing risks, blockers, and recommendations to project stakeholders.
Automation & Process Improvement
- Identify opportunities to automate ETL and data validation test cases.
- Develop reusable SQL scripts, validation queries, and automation assets.
- Improve QA standards, templates, and testing processes for data projects.
- Support CI/CD and testing best practices for data engineering initiatives.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or related field.
- 10 years of experience in QA/Testing, including strong experience in ETL/Data Warehouse testing.
- Proven experience in a lead or coordinator role managing QA/testing teams.
- Strong hands-on expertise in SQL for data validation and backend testing.
- Experience with ETL tools such as Informatica, Talend, SSIS, DataStage, Ab Initio, or similar.
- Strong understanding of data warehousing concepts, including fact tables, dimension tables, star schema, and snowflake schema.
- Experience validating source-to-target mappings, transformation logic, and batch processing.
- Familiarity with defect tracking and test management tools such as JIRA, ALM, TestRail, or qTest.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.
Preferred, but not required:
- Experience with big data testing and cloud data platforms such as AWS, Azure, or GCP.
- Exposure to tools like Snowflake, Redshift, BigQuery, Databricks, or Hadoop ecosystems.
- Knowledge of test automation tools/frameworks for data validation.
- Experience with BI/reporting tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Cognos.
- Understanding of data governance, data quality, and data lineage concepts.
- ISTQB or other QA certification is a plus.
