The Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Data Analyst with strong insurance and actuarial domain knowledge to support data analysis, reporting, governance, and business intelligence initiatives.
The role will involve working closely with business stakeholders, actuarial teams, underwriting and broking functions, data engineers, and reporting teams to understand business requirements, analyze source systems, define data mappings, and ensure the accuracy and integrity of data used for reporting and decision-making.
The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience in actuarial or insurance environments, strong SQL capabilities, and a proven ability to translate complex business requirements and rules into clear, documented data solutions.
Additional Information*
The base salary for this position will vary based on geography and other factors. In accordance with law, the base salary for this role if filled within Piscaatway,NJ is $125-135 k/year & benefits (see below).
Key Skills and Experience
Data Analysis and Technical Skills
- Strong experience as a Senior Data Analyst, Business Data Analyst, or similar role in an insurance, actuarial, financial services, or data-intensive environment.
- Excellent SQL skills, including:
- Complex joins and subqueries
- Common table expressions
- Window functions
- Aggregations and reconciliations
- Data profiling and validation
- Query optimization
- Proven experience conducting detailed source data analysis across multiple systems.
- Strong capability in preparing and maintaining source-to-target mapping documents.
- Experience documenting business rules, transformation logic, calculations, assumptions, and data definitions.
- Hands-on experience with data reconciliation, data quality analysis, and issue investigation.
- Understanding of data warehouses, data lakes, reporting layers, ETL/ELT processes, and analytical data models.
- Familiarity with Databricks and the Azure data ecosystem.
- Experience working with large, complex, and potentially distributed datasets.
- Exposure to reporting, dashboards, management information, and analytical outputs.
- Ability to interpret technical data structures and explain them in business terms.
Actuarial and Insurance Domain Experience
- Deep knowledge of the insurance domain, with hands-on experience in actuarial, underwriting, broking, or insurance data environments.
- Practical understanding of actuarial processes such as:
- Pricing and rating
- Reserving
- Loss ratios and profitability analysis
- Exposure and premium analysis
- Claims development
- Forecasting and portfolio performance
- Strong understanding of underwriting and broker data, including policy, submission, quote, bound, premium, commission, exposure, risk, and claims information.
- Experience interpreting insurance and actuarial metrics, business rules, and reporting requirements.
- Ability to work effectively with actuaries, underwriters, brokers, finance teams, and business leadership.
- Understanding of insurance reporting cycles, data dependencies, and key operational and regulatory considerations.
Data Governance and Reporting
- Experience working with data governance frameworks, standards, and controls.
- Knowledge of data ownership, stewardship, lineage, metadata, data dictionaries, and critical data elements.
- Experience defining and validating data quality rules and reconciliation controls.
- Exposure to governed reporting environments and consistent KPI or metric definitions.
- Ability to ensure that reporting outputs are complete, accurate, traceable, and aligned with approved business rules.
- Experience supporting reporting requirements, dashboard development, management information, or regulatory reporting.
