Position Overview
The Virtual Chief Information Officer (vCIO) serves as a strategic technology advisor to Managed Services clients. This role bridges business objectives and IT strategy, helping clients align technology investments with long-term goals. The vCIO is responsible for strategic planning, roadmap development, budgeting guidance, risk management, and executive-level relationship management.
This is a consultative, client-facing role—not a technical support position.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic IT Leadership
- Develop and maintain multi-year IT roadmaps aligned with client business goals
- Conduct quarterly business reviews (QBRs) with executive stakeholders
- Provide technology budgeting and forecasting guidance
- Identify opportunities for operational efficiency and innovation
- Align cybersecurity strategy with business risk tolerance
Client Relationship Management
- Serve as the primary strategic advisor to assigned accounts
- Build trusted relationships with C-level executives and business owners
- Translate technical concepts into business language
- Manage expectations and drive long-term client satisfaction
Technology Planning & Advisory
- Assess infrastructure, cloud, security, and compliance posture
- Recommend improvements in areas such as:
- Cloud migration
- Microsoft 365 optimization
- Backup and disaster recovery
- Network modernization
- Cybersecurity frameworks (e.g., NIST, CIS Controls)
- Guide digital transformation initiatives
Financial & Budget Oversight
- Develop annual IT budgets
- Present ROI-driven recommendations
- Prioritize projects based on business impact
- Track lifecycle replacement planning (hardware, software, licenses)
Risk & Compliance
- Conduct risk assessments
- Guide clients on regulatory requirements (HIPAA, SOC 2, etc. depending on industry)
- Develop business continuity and disaster recovery strategies
Internal Collaboration
- Work closely with:
- Service Desk
- Project Engineers
- Security Teams
- Account Management
- Ensure strategic plans are executable and documented
- Advocate internally for client priorities
Qualifications
Required
- 5–10 years of IT experience
- 3–5 years in a consultative or client-facing role
- Experience within a Managed Services Provider (MSP) environment preferred
- Strong understanding of:
- Cloud platforms (Azure, M365)
- Networking fundamentals
- Cybersecurity best practices
- IT budgeting and lifecycle planning
- Excellent communication and executive presentation skills
