The Department of Corrections is currently recruiting to fill a Corrections Food Service Leader 3 position. This position is based out of Jackson Correctional Institution in Black River Falls, WI (Jackson County).

Position Summary


This position serves as lead worker in the Food Service Department for Corrections Food Service Leader 2 staff and persons in our care / resident workers.


The duties include training and directing staff, maintaining inventories, preparing production sheets, adjusting menus and menu items as needed and ensuring proper food safety and sanitation practices are employed.


This position supervises the overall sanitation of the kitchen, ensuring compliance with all DOC, State, and Federal guidelines.

Salary Information


This position is in pay schedule and range 03-13 with a starting pay of $23.94/hour. Pay will be set in accordance with the Compensation Plan and Wisconsin Administrative Code in effect at the time of hire. A probationary period is required.

Candidates with no prior permanent employment with the State of Wisconsin in the past 5 years may be eligible to accept a sign-on bonus of $3,000. The sign-on bonus will be paid in two installments: $1500 on the first paycheck and $1500 with the paycheck for the pay period in which the employee attains permanent status (usually 1 year). (UW System employment isn’t disqualifying.)

To receive the bonus, a candidate must sign an agreement indicating they will remain in that position for a year. If the candidate leaves their position prior to completing the one year, they may be required to reimburse the initial payment.

Job Details


This position is not eligible for remote work and will work on site.

This position has physical requirements related to performing the job duties that involve being able to stand and move freely. This role will prepare food and inspect sanitation, which involves manipulating fine objects, operating appliances, and lifting freely up to 50 lbs. to perform necessary tasks, and may need to occasionally climb stairs. A full list is included with the position description.

Food service workers will work in a commercial-style kitchen in close proximity to other staff and resident workers. This position must also comply with the facility’s health policies, including those regarding Tuberculosis Screening and Hepatitis Vaccination.

This position is normally scheduled for 40 hours per week and usually works four 10-hour shifts (either 6:30 AM to 4:30 PM or 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM). This rotating schedule includes some mornings, evenings, holidays, and weekends.

This employee in this position will need to be able to work up to 14 hours per day and more than 40 hours per week on any shift based on daily operational needs. This may include weekends and holidays.

This position is FLSA Non-Exempt.

This position is not anticipated to travel on a regular basis, but most DOC positions occasionally travel for training, meetings, conferences, or similar events.

Applicants must be legally authorized to work in the United States (i.e., a citizen or national of the U.S., a lawful permanent resident, or an alien authorized to work in the U.S. without DOC sponsorship) at the time of application.

The Department of Corrections may conduct pre-employment drug screens. Any applicant who is offered employment in a position which requires a pre-employment drug screen must pass the screen as a contingency of employment.

The Department of Corrections will conduct criminal background checks on applicants prior to selection. Upon hire, all new DOC employees are subject to fingerprinting.

Qualifications


Minimally qualified applicants will have:


  • Experience preparing and directing other workers in the preparation of cooking and baking of foods, (such as: meats, vegetables, breads, desserts, bag lunches and special occasion meals).
  • Experience training or teaching others skills and tasks such as: food preparation, cooking, baking, meat, cutting and processing.
  • Experience maintaining cleanliness, ensuring food safety, and monitoring compliance with sanitation standards.
  • Experience scheduling the production of food to meet meal times for a large-scale food operation.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

Applicants must obtain ServSafe Food Manager Certification (or equivalent) within six months of hire and maintain certification throughout employment.
