ROADWAY DESIGN ENGINEER - RICHFIELD OR CEDAR CITY

The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is seeking two (2) Roadway Design Engineers in Region Four, located in our Richfield and Cedar City offices.

About The Role

As a Roadway Design Engineer you will design and prepare biddable plans, engineers' estimates, and special provisions for construction projects. This position will manage and coordinate engineering assignments related to roadway design and other roadway projects and programs. This includes guiding and training technicians and other engineers in the use of proper design standards and engineering practices, utilizing specific transportation engineering software, CADD software, and basic office software.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and prepare biddable plans, engineer's estimates, and specs and specials needed to bid and award quality transportation projects.
  • Provide design support for transportation projects through construction.
  • Prepare concept reports for future transportation projects.
  • Quality assurance/quality control of other engineers’ transportation projects.
  • Mentor, assist, and train other engineers.
  • Research and seek out new technologies and processes that may be incorporated into the Department's projects.
  • Regularly review, as assigned, through research sources, i.e. Transportation Review Board (TRB), National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP), etc. for developing or new technologies that may be of benefit to UDOT.
  • Coordinate with technical experts to determine where improvements are necessary.
  • Develop plans for improvements and oversee the implementation of the plans.
  • Evaluate these plans for applicability and effectiveness.
  • Coordinate with industry and Department Regions and Functional groups.
  • Suggest, make, and review changes to existing documents (Standards/Special Provisions/ MOIs), as necessary.
  • Work closely with project managers to oversee and inform consultant project teams on Department standards and procedures.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will be placed at one of the following levels based on their qualifications.

  • Roadway Design Engineer 4 (Engineer IV),full salary range $45.53 - $72.25
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah;
  • Two years post licensure experience; and
  • Meets skills and knowledge requirements for RDE 4, as outlined in the Roadway Design Engineer Career Ladder (RDECL). (Click here to review the RDECL.)
  • Roadway Design Engineer 3 (Engineer III), full salary range is $37.46 - $60.77 (Considered the entry-level position for the RDECL)
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah; and
  • Less than two years of post-licensure experience.
  • Roadway Design Engineer (Engineer II), full salary range is $34.39 - $57.57 (No Professional Engineer (PE) license yet)
    • Bachelor’s degree in engineering; and
    • Proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE); and
    • Completed at least two years of post-graduate engineering experience. (A Master's degree, in a related field, may be considered for one-year post-graduate experience.)
Preferred Qualifications

Preference may be given to those with any of the following:

  • Experience with Bentley suite programs utilized for Digital Delivery.
  • Experience using engineering data processing application programs.

Other Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities

Here are some of the knowledge, skills, and abilities that are typically associated with the job, though not all-inclusive:

  • Knowledge of the principles, theories, and practices of civil engineering.
  • Ability to read and interpret maps, plats, charts, plans, and electronic schematics.
  • Proficiency with CADD (Open Roads Designer, Microstation and InRoads) and other related design software to deliver UDOT design projects.
  • Thorough understanding of engineering standards such as AASHTO Green Book, Roadside Design Guide, UDOT Roadway Design Manual, UDOT Standard and Supplemental Drawings and Specifications.
  • Excellent skills in identifying and solving complex problems including collaboration and written and verbal communication skills.

Supplemental Information

  • Advancement Opportunities: Engineer IV, Engineer III, and Engineer II will be eligible for upward advancement through the design career path. Advancement opportunities consist of three (3) design career steps with a possible pay increase associated with each step. Depending on the starting position level, advancement positions consist of the following: Engineer III , Engineer IV, Engineer IV .
  • Working Conditions: Risks found in the typical office setting, which is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated, e.g., safe use of office equipment, avoiding trips and falls, observing fire regulations, etc.
  • Physical Requirements: Moderate - Work requires physical exertion. May require the ability to stand; walk over rough surfaces; bend, crouch, stoop, stretch, reach, lift moderately heavy items (up to 50 lbs.) in a recurring manner and/or for long periods of time.
  • Department of Human Resource Management rules regarding promotions and transfers apply to current state employees.
