JOB DESCRIPTION: The purpose of this position is to perform maintenance and repair duties for all road equipment, vehicles and buildings; and operate equipment and vehicles. The work is performed under the supervision of the Chief Mechanic.
- Assists the Chief Mechanic with running the shop and prioritizing maintenance work. Must be able to run the shop in absence of the Chief Mechanic.
- Diagnoses vehicle and equipment mechanical malfunctions. Determines need for repairs and maintenance.
- Repairs small engines.
- Repairs and replace tires, including balancing, mounting, and front-end alignments if equipped.
- Performs regular maintenance functions and repair all road equipment and vehicles. Checks and changes fluid levels, filters and belts, overhauls engines and transmissions, changes spark plugs and other ignition parts. Orders parts for equipment.
- Fabricates parts and tools for snow removal and other department equipment.
- Operates a variety of construction/maintenance equipment such as motor graders, skid steers, backhoes, aerial lifts, dump trucks, etc.
- Oversees commercial driver’s license training.
- Trains and mentors Equipment Mechanic I personnel.
- Acts as a liaison with dealerships for warrant work.
- Plows snow. Performs maintenance on snow related equipment.
- Performs building and facilities maintenance/repair tasks. Performs electrical, carpentry and plumbing repairs. Performs welding work.
- Cleans road equipment and facilities.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent, vocational/technical training in equipment/vehicle repair.
- A valid class A commercial driver’s license w/air brake endorsement required.
- Certification in one or more of the following specialized repairs: Welding, Air Conditioning Systems, Alignment System, Hydraulics/fabrication, Diesel mechanics, Small Engine Repair, Snow Equipment or any other pre-approved certification within the maintenance repair field deemed equivalent by to the Highway Department.
- 4 years equipment repair and operating experience.
- Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills and abilities may be considered.
- Ability to train other personnel.
- Employment is contingent on successfully passing a full criminal background check.
