Underground Jumbo Operator

Summary of Position:

A Jumbo operator is a high-level technical specialist in underground mining or tunneling responsible for the safe and precise operation of multi-boom hydraulic drilling rigs.

Essential Functions:

• Set up and operate multiboom jumbo drills to drill blast holes for development headings.
• Follow survey layouts, mark drilling patterns, and align drills for precise hole placement (line and grade).
• Conduct preshift equipment checks and inspect the work area for hazards (scaling loose rock, checking for bootlegs).
• Secure the work area with barricades and ensure compliance with strict safety protocols.
• Perform daily lubrication, cleaning, and fueling of the jumbo and other machinery.
• Conducting preoperational inspections, performing minor field repairs (e.g., changing drill bits or hydraulic hoses), and ensuring the rig is properly lubricated.
• Complete daily reports on activities, production, and equipment status.
• Communicate with shift supervisors and other team members (loaders, blasters).
• Understanding mining plans, equipment, and ground conditions.

Experience and Training:

• A minimum of one (1) to two (2) years underground mining required.
• Inspect equipment, structures, or materials to identify the cause of errors or other problems or defects.
• Face drilling experience a plus
• Ability to work safely and effectively in an underground mining environment required.
• Perform and document work area inspections and equipment inspection/ operation cards.
• Giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate with the ability of communicating with others be it verbal, written, handheld radios, mine radios, cap lamp signals or any other type of communication necessary for the safe completion of the task
• Ability to work within a team environment, work closely with peers at all levels with a professional attitude required.

Work Environment:

The work environment characteristics describe here are representative of those an employee encounters will performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may work in extreme cold/hot conditions, occasionally exposed fumes or airborne particles, chemicals, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate to high, appropriate hearing protection may be needed and required.

Health and Safety:

Expected to always wear proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while in a production environment (hard hat, safety belt, self-rescue respiratory device, steel toed boats/metatarsal protection, reflective visible clothing) or as required for a specific job duty. Ensure that all safety procedures and regulatory guidelines are followed. Support the site safety culture through leadership and regularly engaging with and holding the workforce accountable for safe work practices. Participate in health and safety meetings and risk reviews as required

Work Schedule:

The incumbent is expected to work a rotating shift with required overtime for training or other business circumstances.
