We are looking to recruit Swim Instructors to conduct swim lessons while ensuring the safety of members at our YMCA Swimming pools. Essential Functions
- Ensures that practice time is sufficient for all students to learn skills.
- Follows logical skill progressions.
- Ability to foster personal growth, personal safety, stroke development and fun during each swim lesson.
- Recognizes and corrects improper strokes or skills using positive feedback.
- Plans, leads, and participates in swim lesson activities.
- Responds immediately and takes appropriate action in all situations that present the potential for injury.
- Checks that safety equipment is correctly placed and is in proper working order at the start of each shift.
- Communicates and enforces all safety rules, policies and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area to all participants, members and staff.
- Maintains accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.
- Knows and reviews all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, and the “safe-in-six” model; completes related reports as required.
- Remains calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.
- Participates in scheduled staff trainings, meetings, and events as required.
- Perform other job-related duties as requested and necessary.
- Minimum age of 16 years old.
- Ability to swim at YMCA Lifeguard prerequisite or equivalent ability to swim 500 yards.
- Lifeguard, CPR, AED & First Aid for the Professional Rescuer Certifications through the American Red Cross or other nationally recognized organization. Certification obtained through a nationally accredited organization consisting of a blended class (part online, part in person) will be accepted. Online certifications do not meet this requirement. Certifications must be maintained and current at all times.
- Knowledge in the principles and practices of effective YMCA Lifeguarding.
- Ability to interact positively with a diverse group of people.
- All required online training must be completed before starting work, which will be compensated for accordingly.
- Criminal record clearance if over 18 years old.
- Ability to spend 2-4 hours in the water?at a time.
- Ability to communicate effectively to swimmers and their parents/guardians.
- Ability to lift equipment, and to lift a small to average size child.
- Ability to see and supervise children.
- Ability to lift as required in normal rescue situations.
- Ability to see and hear to perform the essential functions of a lifeguard.
- Ability to see and rescue in an aquatic emergency no more than 20 seconds.
- Ability to sit and walk while scanning the entire pool.
- Remain alert with no lapses of consciousness.
