Environmental Project Manager (Construction Projects)
Location: Wausau, WI (office and project-site based)

Overview:
We are recruiting on behalf of our client, a leading general contractor for heavy civil infrastructure projects, for a newly created Environmental Specialist role. This position is embedded within several complex utilities construction projects in the area.
The role bridges the gap between environmental permitting requirements and real-world construction activity, ensuring strict compliance, coordination, and clear communication across field teams, consultants, and local agencies.
Primary Purpose:
An Environmental Specialist oversees all aspects of projects, sets deadlines, assigns responsibilities, and monitors and summarizes progress of projects. They are familiar with a variety of environmental concepts, practices, and procedures and relies on experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. Leads and directs the work of others. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected. They ensure clear, tactful, concise communication flows upwards and downwards throughout the organization and that projects are completed in a timely manner without compromising quality.
Key Responsibilities:
- Interpret environmental permits and ensure alignment with construction scope and activities
- Monitor ongoing site compliance and proactively address gaps or deviations
- Coordinate with third-party permitting consultants and ensure clarity across all stakeholders
- Maintain documentation binders for real-time tracking of approvals and compliance
- Act as the main point of contact for permitting matters, including communication with local and federal authorities
- Support audits, inspections, and site walkthroughs
- Escalate risks and complex issues to the Environmental Manager as needed
Project Environment:
- Major design-build utilities (fiberoptic, gas, electrical) projects in Wisconsin and nearby states
- Office-based with occasional travel (project-dependent)
- High-touch stakeholder environment with regular meetings, reviews, and coordination loops
Ideal Background & Experience:
- 2 years in an environmental field and 1 years of project management experience
- Experience in the utility and/or construction industry
- Soil Science, Geology, Environmental Science, Biology, Ecology, or related Earth Science bachelors degree or higher.
- Strong interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of diverse individuals
- Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment, including prioritizing activities, enhancing efficiencies and being organized
- Experience using ESRI and ArcGIS programs
