Summary: SMS Holdings is currently growing our team, and is seeking an empowered, knowledgeable, empathetic and decisive individual to join our team as a Technical Project Manager.

The Technical Project Manager is responsible for leading the planning, execution, and delivery of technology projects, including custom application development and Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) system implementations, on time, within scope, and within budget.

This role requires a strong blend of project management discipline and technical acumen to guide cross-functional teams, align initiatives with business objectives, and ensure high-quality outcomes. The Project Manager collaborates closely with stakeholders across business and IT functions, oversees third-party vendors and contractors, and ensures that technical and business requirements are effectively translated into successful project deliverables.

 

Key Responsibilities include the following. Other duties and special projects may be assigned:

Strategy & Planning

  • Define project scope, goals, success criteria, and deliverables that align with organizational objectives in collaboration with stakeholders and technical leads.
  • Develop comprehensive project plans for both custom-built and COTS-based solutions, including resource allocation, timelines, and integration points.
  • Communicate project expectations clearly to team members, sponsors, and external partners.
  • Align project objectives with enterprise architecture standards and technology roadmaps.
  • Identify and mitigate project risks related to dependencies, data integrations, and technology adoption.
  • Define project governance and reporting structures.
  • Conduct post-implementation reviews to capture lessons learned and drive continuous improvement.

Acquisition & Deployment

  • Estimate resources, effort, and budgets required for software development, configuration, and integration projects.
  • Collaborate with procurement and vendor management to source COTS solutions and implementation partners.
  • Evaluate and recommend technical solutions, frameworks, and implementation approaches that best meet business needs.
  • Oversee software configurations, customizations, data migrations, and testing activities to ensure readiness for production.

Execution & Delivery

  • Direct and manage all phases of the project life cycle--from initiation through deployment and stabilization.
  • Partner with developers, system integrators, and business analysts to ensure clear understanding of functional and technical requirements.
  • Track and report project milestones, deliverables, and quality metrics using project management tools (e.g., Jira, MS Project, Smartsheet).
  • Manage project scope and change control with proper documentation and stakeholder approval.
  • Lead technical discussions and resolve conflicts related to architecture, design, and data integration.
  • Ensure all configurations and custom developments meet business, security, and compliance standards.

Team Leadership & Communication

  • Build, coach, and lead cross-functional teams, including business analysts, developers, QA engineers, and vendors.
  • Motivate teams to achieve project goals and deliver high-quality outcomes.
  • Facilitate workshops, stand-ups, and status meetings with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Serve as the liaison between business units and IT, ensuring alignment of solutions with organizational goals.
  • Foster collaboration and accountability across all levels of the project team.

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Knowledge & Experience

  • 5 years of direct project management experience with end-to-end delivery of software development or COTS implementation projects.
  • Proven success leading enterprise application implementations, such as ERP, HRIS, or CRM systems.
  • Strong understanding of software development life cycle (SDLC) and Agile/Scrum methodologies.
  • Familiarity with programming concepts, application architectures, and data integrations.
  • Experience working with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or similar) and system integration tools (e.g., Boomi, Workato, MuleSoft).
  • Proficiency in project management and collaboration tools such as Jira, MS Project, and Smartsheet.

Education/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering, or related field
  • PMP, CBAP, or PMI-PBA certification
  • Agile certification (e.g., CSM, PMI-ACP) a plus.

Minimum Required Work Experience: 3 years-of product ownership, project management, business/system analysis or other job-related experience.

Computer Skills:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have experience in and knowledge of:
