Position Overview
The Head Cross Country Coach is responsible for the overall leadership, development, and supervision of the high school cross country program. This includes planning and implementing a competitive program aligned with district expectations, promoting student-athlete development, and ensuring compliance with all applicable rules and regulations.
Minimum Qualifications
Experience coaching cross country, track, or related endurance sports (high school or higher preferred)
Knowledge of training principles, conditioning, and injury prevention specific to distance running
Valid Arizona IVP Fingerprint Clearance Card
NFHS or AIA coaching certifications (or willingness to obtain)
Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification (or willingness to obtain)
Key Responsibilities
Program Leadership & Development
Plan, organize, and supervise all aspects of the cross country program
Develop season training plans, including pre-season conditioning and in-season progression
Establish performance goals for both team and individual athletes
Promote a culture of accountability, sportsmanship, and academic success
Coaching & Athlete Development
Instruct student-athletes in proper running techniques, pacing strategies, and race preparation
Monitor athlete conditioning, progress, and overall well-being
Implement safe training practices and injury prevention protocols
Provide feedback and mentorship to support individual athlete growth
Operations & Compliance
Ensure compliance with Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) rules and district policies
Coordinate meet schedules, transportation, and supervision of student-athletes during events
Maintain accurate records, including rosters, eligibility, and participation documentation
Inventory, maintain, and request equipment and uniforms as needed
Communication & Collaboration
Communicate effectively with student-athletes, parents, school administration, and athletic staff
Collaborate with the Athletic Director regarding program needs, budgets, and scheduling
Support multi-sport participation while coordinating with other coaches as appropriate
Student Supervision & Safety
Ensure appropriate supervision of student-athletes at all times
Enforce district and team expectations for behavior and conduct
Respond appropriately to injuries and emergencies following district protocols
Additional Expectations
Attend required district and athletic department meetings
Participate in professional development related to coaching and student-athlete safety
Serve as a positive representative of the school and district at all events
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, and run for extended periods
Ability to demonstrate running techniques and supervise outdoor practices in varying weather conditions
Ability to lift and carry equipment (up to 25–40 lbs)
Evaluation
Performance will be evaluated by the Athletic Director based on program organization, athlete development, compliance, communication, and overall effectiveness of the program.
