What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lifeguard position at Sheridan County YMCA?
Make a difference while keeping our community safe! The Sheridan County YMCA is looking for responsible, attentive, and energetic Lifeguards to join our Aquatics team.
As a Lifeguard, you'll play an important role in creating a safe, welcoming, and positive environment for everyone who visits our pool. You'll actively monitor the aquatic area, enforce safety guidelines, respond to emergencies, and build positive relationships with members and guests—all while supporting the Y's mission of strengthening our community.
What You'll Do
- Maintain active and attentive surveillance of the pool and aquatic areas
- Respond quickly and appropriately to emergencies using Red Cross Lifeguard training and YMCA procedures
- Enforce pool safety rules and help create a safe environment for all swimmers
- Administer swim tests and assist swimmers in following appropriate safety requirements
- Build positive relationships with members, participants, and fellow staff
- Perform required pool chemical testing and maintain accurate records
- Conduct equipment and safety checks and report concerns to the Aquatics Director
- Maintain a professional, rescue-ready appearance while on duty
- Participate in required staff meetings, in-services, and ongoing training
- Follow YMCA policies related to child safety, appropriate boundaries, abuse prevention, and mandated reporting
What We're Looking For
- Must be at least 15 years old
- Ability to obtain a Red Cross Lifeguarding certification and maintain it
- Ability to demonstrate lifeguarding skills according to Red Cross standards
- Ability to remain alert, attentive, and focused while on duty
- Ability to clearly observe all areas within an assigned surveillance zone
- Willingness to complete required YMCA safety and abuse-prevention training
- A positive, responsible, and professional attitude
- Ability to meet the physical demands of the position, including walking, standing, bending, reaching, lifting, and performing required lifesaving skills
