TITLE: Heavy Equipment Mechanic
DEPARTMENT: Roads and Bridges Division of Public Works Dept
SALARY: $56,927.54 To $61,304.74 Annually, DOE, Grade 18

JOB SUMMARY: This position is responsible for the repair and maintenance of heavy equipment.

MAJOR DUTIES:

• Inspects, diagnoses, and locates malfunctions in mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems.
• Performs general and skilled mechanical, hydraulic, and fabrication work.
• Operates diagnostic equipment and hand and power tools used in the repair and maintenance of equipment.
• Replaces or repairs faulty parts.
• Responds to break downs in the field; makes field repairs or arranges transport of disabled equipment to shop.
• Performs preventive maintenance on vehicles and equipment.
• Cleans and washes equipment and vehicles as needed.
• Manages work area and maintains tools and work areas.
• Performs cutting and welding repairs; fabricates parts.
• Maintains work time and materials records.
• Writes purchase orders, orders parts and supplies.
• Performs other related duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

• Knowledge of the repair and maintenance of mechanical equipment.
• Knowledge of heavy equipment characteristics.
• Knowledge of relevant federal, state, and local laws and ordinances.
• Skill in the operation of job-related diagnostic equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
• Skill in the repair and maintenance of a wide variety of mechanical equipment.
• Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.
• Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.
• Skill in setting priorities for competing projects.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, bending, or crouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, and distinguishes between shades of color.

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work is typically performed in a garage or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Wyoming for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
