OPEN POSITION: Patrol Deputy
PAY RATE: $62,837.36 annually depending on experience.

DESCRIPTION: Deputies are responsible for keeping the peace by the enforcement of federal, state, and local laws, the protection of life and property, response to emergency incidents, and completing any required civil process service.

MAJOR DUTIES:

• Vehicle and foot patrol of the entire county in order to detect and deter criminal activity and/or traffic violations through proactive and reactive responses to violations of Wyoming State Statutes and Sheridan County Resolutions.
• Patrol school campuses to maintain a safe and secure learning environment; attends school-related activities and sporting events.
• Enforce traffic laws; including traffic stops, issuance of citations and warnings, and investigation of traffic accidents/crashes. Provide traffic control as needed for events such as parades, funerals, school events, school zones, traffic hazards, crime scenes, fires, or natural disasters.
• Respond to calls relayed by the communications center and the public, including but not limited to domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, rescue operations, public service duties, stranded motorists, and all other calls for service.
• Investigates crimes; conduct investigations, field interviews, and follow-up investigations to include the collection of information and evidence, securing crime scenes, and effectively interview victims, complainants, suspects, and witnesses; process crime scenes. Collect, process, and document evidence as required.
• Effect arrests, using reasonable force and restraints as necessary, including juveniles; subdues resisting subjects using various techniques, weapons, and tactics; process and transport offenders to detention facility.
• Teach classes on law enforcement related issues within the community as assigned; attends various community meetings as assigned.
• Provide assistance and/or provide backup support to other deputies and jurisdictions as necessary.
• Attend hearings and testify in judicial proceedings.
• Conduct legal pat downs or frisks and searches using search incident to arrest, consent, or a warrant on people for weapons and contraband; conduct legal searches of vehicles, buildings, and outdoor areas using search incident to arrest, consent, or a warrant to collect evidence.
• Prepare investigative and other reports, provide accompanying documentation and information to appropriate entity in a timely manner.
• Conduct civil process service, including subpoenas, warrants, civil executions, and notices; complete VIN inspections.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION:

• Knowledge of required law enforcement training, standards, methods and procedures.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and ordinances/resolutions.
• Knowledge of agency’s current principles and practices.
• Knowledge of the physical and social characteristics of the county.
• Skill in interpersonal relations.
• Skill in the operation of law enforcement vehicles and equipment.
• Skill in oral and written communication.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

• Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the successful completion of The Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy Peace Officer Basic or equivalent, and the successful completion of the Sheridan County Sheriff’s Office field training program.
• Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of Wyoming for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
• Ability to meet current requirements set forth by the Peace Officer Standards and Training Certification for the State of Wyoming.
