Mobile Heavy Equipment Mechanic

Pay Range: $32 - $38 per hour depending on experience.

Schedule: Full-time; may include early mornings, long shifts, overtime, and weekend work.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Mobile Heavy Equipment Mechanic to join our team in South Dakota. This role involves performing maintenance, diagnostics, and repairs on various types of heavy machinery, including diesel engines and hydraulic systems. The ideal candidate will have strong technical expertise and a commitment to safety and quality.

Key Responsibilities:

• Inspect, test, and diagnose faulty operations and parts.
• Perform routine maintenance and repairs on heavy equipment, including farm machinery and vehicles.
• Diagnose and repair malfunctions in diesel engines, hydraulic systems, and other components.
• Disassemble and reassemble heavy equipment and components.
• Conduct brake repairs (including air brake systems) and suspension work.
• Perform regular safety and maintenance inspections.
• Interpret technical manuals, diagnostic charts, and schematics.
• Order parts and maintain detailed records of repairs and maintenance schedules.
• Collaborate with operators and team members to ensure timely completion of projects.
• Communicate effectively with clients regarding equipment needs and repair status.

Required Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED; certification from trade or technical school in maintenance or diesel repair highly preferred.
• Minimum 3–5 years of proven experience as a Heavy Equipment Mechanic or similar role.
• Valid state-issued driver’s license; Class A or B license preferred.
• Strong hydraulic knowledge, including open and closed loop systems.
• Ability to lift up to 75 lbs and work at heights of 50 ft or more.
• Comfortable working in all weather conditions and confined spaces.
• Ability to clear pre-employment drug/alcohol screening.

Preferred Knowledge & Skills:

• Experience with laptop-based diagnostic software (CAT Electronic Technician, Cummins INSIGHT, Allison Trans, Detroit DDEC, Service Advisor).
• Familiarity with CAT Scrapers (637E, 627E), 336F excavators, 140H/160M blades, wheel loaders, and Komatsu dozers.
• Strong problem-solving and organizational skills.
• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks.

Tools & Technology:

• Heavy machinery including bulldozers, excavators, loaders, and scrapers.
• Diagnostic tools and OEM specifications for repairs.

Work Environment:

• Active construction and maintenance sites.
• Exposure to all weather conditions, loud noise, dust, and heavy machinery.
• PPE and strict safety compliance required.

Physical Requirements:

• Extended periods of standing, squatting, kneeling, and reaching.
• Ability to bend, stoop, twist, crawl, and climb ladders.
• Exposure to vibration and need for precise hand-eye coordination.
