Shaffer is seeking a hands-on, collaborative Controller to lead our accounting function with a strong focus on general ledger accuracy and completeness. This is a player/coach role—ideal for a leader who not only understands the work but is energized by rolling up their sleeves, improving processes, and developing a high-performing team.
The right candidate brings both technical accounting expertise and a passion for coaching others, while continuously looking for ways to improve efficiency through technology and smarter processes. This individual is curious, asks “why,” and helps the team connect their work to the bigger picture.
This is a full-time, in office position with workload generally averaging 40–50 hours per week, with flexibility based on business cycles.

What You’ll Do
Lead, Coach, and Develop the Team
- Lead, manage, and develop the accounting team, fostering a collaborative, accountable, and customer-focused culture
Own the Close & General Ledger Integrity
- Manage month-end and year-end close processes, ensuring accuracy, timeliness, and integrity of the general ledger
- Oversee daily accounting operations, including AP, banking, and journal entries
Drive Process Improvement & Efficiency
- Identify opportunities to streamline accounting processes and improve systems
- Leverage technology to increase efficiency and reduce manual work
Ensure Compliance & Support Audits
- Oversee sales, use, and property tax compliance, licenses, and filings
- Support annual audit/review processes and provide necessary documentation
Partner with Finance & Leadership
- Provide financial insights and analysis to leadership
- Support budgeting and forecasting efforts
What You Bring
- 5 years of progressive accounting experience
- 5 years of people management experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting (required); CPA preferred
- Strong background in general ledger accounting and close processes
- Experience with sales and use tax compliance
- Technological savvy including hands-on experience in ERP implementation or system migration
- Exposure to public accounting/audit strongly preferred
- Experience in a small or family-owned business environment is a plus
- Demonstrated ability to be both strategic and hands-on
