Responsibilities

DESCRIPTION:

The Educational Advisor provides advisement to current and prospective students on a wide range of services on all programs and courses offered by the College. Provides support services consistent with the mission of the College and philosophy of the department that assists students to define and reach their educational goals.

Essential Functions

  • Provides academic advising for Students in College Credit, Vocational, and Adult Education programs. Provides comprehensive information and makes referrals to assist students with making appropriate decisions regarding their Academic Success.
  • Provides accurate, up-to-date information to prospective and currently enrolled students on programs and services.
  • Identifies and interprets the needs of students to the institution.
  • Provides academic advisement to students on a one-on-one, small, or large group basis.
  • Works with FTIC, Current, Returning, and Transfer students to complete paperwork associated with the advisement/registration process.
  • Refers students who require career or personal counseling to professional counselors.
  • Assists college credit students to develop a class schedule, verify prerequisites and test scores, and register.
  • Provides transition services to students as they transfer to upper division institutions or enter the job market.
  • Provides input into the development of and provides support in the implementation of initiatives that are driven by their departments and/or campus.
  • Provides data for and assists with the development of the Annual Report.
  • Attends staff meetings, participates in strategic planning sessions, Professional Development Day, Convocation, conferences, and Institutional events as requested and that support college- wide goals.
  • Answers telephone calls promptly and courteously, providing accurate information or referring as appropriate.
  • Supports the institution in creating a positive learning environment for all students.
  • Performs other duties as may be required or assigned.


Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree from a regionally or nationally accredited institution.
  • One year of experience working with students in an educational setting or related experience.


Desired Qualifications

  • Experience in a counseling and advising environment.
  • Bilingual communication.

  • Skilled in the use of computer and related word processing, database, and spreadsheet application software and ability to access, input, retrieve, and interpret data from a computer and provide requested reports.

  • Ability to work in a flexible and fast paced environment, exercising good judgment and discretion without close supervision.
  • Ability to use multiple modes of contact to serve the needs of students including face-to-face interaction, electronic interaction, and interaction via telephone.

Pay Benefits And Work Schedule

$21.66 hourly up to 26 hours per week.

Conditions of Employment

Finalists and individuals recommended for employment at Seminole State College must reside in the State of Florida at the time of hire and may be subject to background investigations and fingerprinting in compliance with Florida Statute 1001.64; and Seminole State College Policy 1.020; 2.020. Criminal background checks and fingerprinting will be conducted for all new employees, and for rehired employees who have had a break in service for one year or more. The Office of Human Resources will determine which background checks shall be conducted for each position, based upon its review of job descriptions and the responsibilities of the position. These include, but are not limited to, positions that have access to money, master keys, security-sensitive areas and confidential information; positions that have the capability to create, delete, and alter records; and positions that are responsible for the care and instruction of children. The College will conduct various types of background checks which may include, but are not limited to: criminal background, credit check, driver's license check, previous employment and references.
