Scion Nonprofit Staffing has been engaged to conduct a search for a Director of People Operations & Compliance on behalf of a mission-driven behavioral health and housing organization based in Los Angeles County. This is an exciting opportunity for a strategic and hands-on HR leader to build, stabilize, and professionalize people operations across a growing multi-site organization serving high-needs populations.
This role is ideal for a highly operational HR professional with deep expertise in California employment law, employee relations, workplace investigations, accommodations and leave management, leadership coaching, and compliance-heavy environments.
Key Responsibilities
• Serve as an internal subject matter expert on California employment law, including wage and hour compliance, leave management, accommodations, employee classifications, and disciplinary practices
• Audit and strengthen HR policies, procedures, and operational practices to minimize organizational risk and improve compliance
• Partner with legal counsel as needed on complex employee relations and compliance matters
• Proactively identify organizational vulnerabilities and implement preventative HR strategies
• Lead complex and sensitive employee relations matters, investigations, and conflict resolution processes with professionalism and objectivity
• Provide coaching and guidance to managers and supervisors on performance management, documentation, communication, accountability, and legal compliance
• Support organizational culture development efforts focused on professionalism, accountability, collaboration, and trauma-informed leadership practices
• Help establish scalable leadership development systems and management standards across multiple sites
• Build and improve HR systems, workflows, and operational processes for a growing organization
• Review and modernize employee handbooks, corrective action procedures, onboarding/offboarding processes, accommodations tracking, and performance management systems
• Partner closely with executive leadership to strengthen organizational communication, operational consistency, and workforce planning
• Support recruiting strategy and hiring efforts for leadership and critical operational positions
Qualifications
• 7 years of progressive HR leadership and employee relations experience required
• Deep knowledge of California employment law and HR compliance required
• Strong experience managing workplace investigations, leaves of absence, accommodations, and high-conflict employee relations matters
• Experience supporting multi-site organizations and developing operational HR infrastructure strongly preferred
• Demonstrated success coaching managers and supporting leadership development initiatives
• Bilingual English/Spanish strongly preferred but not required
Compensation & Benefits
This position offers a competitive salary range of approximately $140,000–$170,000 DOE, along with a comprehensive benefits package and the opportunity to make a meaningful impact within a rapidly growing, mission-driven organization.
