Internship Overview
This developmental opportunity provides hands-on experience supporting air quality, waste management, and environmental compliance programs within the electric utility industry. Working under the guidance of experienced environmental professionals, the intern will gain exposure to state and federal environmental regulations while assisting with projects that support Santee Cooper’s environmental programs and operations.
- Internships run from May 17, 2027 - August 6, 2027
- Interns will work 40 hours per week
As a Biology Analytical Services Intern, you may assist with:
- Learning and applying state and federal environmental regulations, particularly those related to air quality and waste management
- Supporting air quality compliance activities, including stack testing, air permitting, Tier II and Toxic Release Inventory (TRI) reporting
- Assisting with environmental data collection, analysis, documentation, and regulatory reporting
- Supporting environmental projects related to air emissions and regulatory compliance
- Assisting with Santee Cooper’s Corporate PCB Program
- Gaining exposure to hazardous, non-hazardous, and universal waste management practices
- Supporting waste inspections, documentation, data management, transportation, and disposal activities
- Assisting with Environmental Management Information System (EMIS) data and records
- Reviewing environmental regulations and researching proposed or changing regulatory requirements
- Supporting Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) compliance activities
- Assisting with hazardous waste reports, contingency plans, and environmental compliance documentation
- Supporting Environmental Management System (EMS) initiatives and programs
- Reviewing projects and operational changes for potential environmental impacts
- Participating in environmental projects alongside senior environmental professionals
- Gaining exposure to Santee Cooper’s Corporate Spill Response Team and spill prevention and response activities
This Internship Offers Exposure To
- Environmental and analytical chemistry
- Laboratory sample preparation and testing
- Water, fuels, coal, ash, and waste analysis
- Laboratory instrumentation and calibration
- Quality assurance and quality control procedures
- Laboratory data management and reporting
- Environmental regulatory requirements
- ASTM, USEPA, Standard Methods, and SCDES laboratory procedures
- Laboratory certification and proficiency testing
- Sample collection and chain-of-custody procedures
Qualified Candidates Must
- Be pursuing a degree in Biology, Environmental Science, Chemistry or a related field
- Have completed their first year at a 2-year college/university (transfer program) or 4-year college/university
- Be enrolled as a full-time student Fall 2027
- Successfully undergo pre-employment physical and drug screen if selected for this position
