Job Summary

JOB SUMMARY/BASIC FUNCTION:The mission of the English as a Second Language (ESL) and Vocational English as a Second Language (VESL) programs at Salt Lake Community College is to strengthen students’ English language skills to support their personal, professional, and academic success. Faculty members will develop, coordinate and teach curriculum for ESL/VESL courses, with a focus on preparing students for entry into technical education programs and/or undergraduate, college-level instruction.

Faculty may be assigned to teach at any SLCC campus or off-site locations, including local businesses, and may teach daytime, evening, and/or Saturday classes. Responsibilities include becoming familiar with and adhering to all college policies, especially those governing interactions with colleagues, staff, administrators, and departments, and maintaining professionalism in all communications and conduct.

Faculty will collaborate closely with department peers and administrators to understand processes and procedures that contribute to effective teaching and active participation within the academic unit. Maintaining professional and collegial behavior is essential.

Instructional responsibilities include teaching ESL/VESL courses for academic and career/technical education purposes; participating in learning communities with faculty from other disciplines; providing ESL/VESL instruction for local companies; and working with community partners to support student success. Faculty will also assist with recruitment efforts and onboarding of students and new faculty.

Faculty are expected to adapt teaching methods to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilities, maintain accurate classroom records (including tracking student progress), and ensure meaningful weekly contact with each enrolled student. They will advise students on course content, program requirements, and progress, while adhering to SLCC policies and procedures.

Additional responsibilities include participating in course and curriculum development, student learning outcomes assessment, program review, committees, and special projects. Faculty must meet all college and department deadlines, evaluate student work in a timely manner, and submit final grades promptly.

Faculty will engage in departmental, school, college, and community service, with a strong emphasis on collaboration with peers. Ongoing responsibilities include curriculum review and development, assessing students’ English listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, and recommending appropriate course placement levels.

Faculty must demonstrate a strong commitment to collaboration and collegiality with both full-time and adjunct faculty, attend regular college meetings and required trainings, and participate in ongoing professional development. Maintaining subject-matter expertise and incorporating new technologies, including open educational resources, into instruction is expected.

Finally, faculty will foster a professional and supportive teaching and learning environment and perform other duties as assigned.

  • Provide effective student-centered instruction and assessment.
  • Alongside department colleagues, build a process of continuous quality improvement for relevant programs.
  • Comply with all college employee policies and procedures.

  • Comply with FERPA policy and other pertinent local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Maintain professional communication etiquette with students.
  • Become a contributing member of the academic unit by engaging in collegial communications and working closely with colleagues and academic supervisors to enhance student success.
  • Maintain a meaningful on-campus presence to enhance community, serve students on campus, and collaborate with colleagues. Campus presence can reflect teaching, professional activities, and/or service as established with your academic supervisor.
  • Work to address student issues as outlined in the Code of Students Rights and Responsibilities.
  • Engage in shared governance.
  • Engage in and contribute to curriculum development and/or process.
  • Establish and maintain teaching and assessment resources to support performance-based hands-on assignments that mimic industry.
  • Engage in course and program assessment, including a comparison of program costs, completion rates, job placement, and licensure data with other USHE institutions, with the aim of enhancing student success, employment outcomes, and maintaining accreditation standards.
  • In collaboration with administration, assist with collecting data metrics such as completion, placement, and licensure information.
  • Engage in the faculty evaluation process annually.
  • Attend, and participate in, required meetings and events, including Convocation, Commencement, SLCC 360, and department meetings.
  • Promote the mission, vision, values, and goals of the College through inclusive teaching, professional activity, and service.

Expectations for Effective Teaching

Create a learning environment focused on student success for each modality taught.

  • In the case of online instruction, facilitate regular and substantive interaction in online courses conducted and observable in the official LMS.
  • Teach courses consistent with institutional and department standards, appropriate Course Curriculum Outline (CCO), and catalog description.
  • Use the college-approved syllabus platform to inform students of course policies and learning outcomes.
  • Teach classes assigned by the academic supervisor per the published class schedule, adhering to days, times, and duration.
  • Demonstrates the incorporation of active and applied learning in courses taught.
  • Provide appropriate feedback for all assignments that allows students to progress in the course.
  • Maintain current grades in the college learning management system (LMS, e.g., Canvas). Use the LMS communication tool as the primary tool for course communication with students.
  • Respond to instruction and daily needs of students, departments, college, and community.
  • Be available to meet with students outside of class a minimum of 5 hours/week for student consultation hours. Availability should reflect the modality of the class and utilize online tools to maximize student access.
  • Faculty in SLTECH work on a 12-month staff calendar schedule. The expectation is a 40-hour work week with 30 Instructional Workload hours
  • Consistently improve pedagogy, course quality, design, and course integrity in response to course, program, and/or college-wide assessment of student learning.
  • Maintain student last day of attendance (for Financial Aid purposes).
  • Conduct formative evaluations of student performance by the last day to drop.
  • Publish course schedule, assignment due dates, late and grading policies, and communication expectations in the learning management system.
  • Assist in maintaining a safe and mutually respectful instructional environment. Prepare and submit incident reports to the Dean of Student Services for inappropriate student behavior as defined by the Code of Student Rights and Responsibilities Policy.
  • Use appropriate resources and technology in the delivery of courses.
  • Respond to student communication promptly (generally within 1-2 working days) and have a communication plan posted in the LMS with response times.

Expectations for Professional Activity

  • Stay current in the field and maintain necessary credentials, professional skills, and teaching competencies consistent with department standards.
  • Collaborate with colleagues by soliciting feedback and responding to suggestions from students and colleagues on pedagogy and the learning environment.
  • Engage in discipline-specific activities.
  • Expand knowledge of teaching practices to enhance student learning and success.
  • Participate in mentoring relationships, serving as a mentor and/or mentee in the department and college.
  • Participate in mandatory departmental and college professional development.

Expectations for Service to the College

  • Provide service to the institution through appropriate participation in academic and college committee assignments and departmental and college need.
  • Experienced SLTech full-time faculty will support new faculty members as they transition from their industry roles and grow and develop as educators.
  • Work with the department to review and recommend program textbooks and/or materials.
  • Engage in the student advising process, formally and/or informally as needed.
  • Develop and/or participate in student recruitment and/or retention strategies.
  • Assist with the assessment of credit for prior learning as needed.
  • Participate in the formulation and implementation of department initiatives.
  • Mentor and provide formative feedback to adjunct faculty.
  • Serve community partners as content area experts as appropriate.
  • Other activities as needed for the department, school, or institution.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

  • Communicate effectively and work with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including those with disabilities.
  • Build and maintain positive working relationships across the College.
  • Work successfully with adult learners, particularly in ESL/VESL settings.
  • Collaborate with students, colleagues, community partners, and employers.
  • Demonstrate strong organizational skills.
  • Apply effective principles of language acquisition and ESL/VESL teaching.
  • Demonstrate competency in using technology to support classroom instruction.

Minimum Qualifications

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:

  • Master’s degree in TESOL, or a Master’s in a related field with a TESOL certificate and/or completion of core coursework in teaching English Language Learners.
  • One to three years of teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD
  • Background in healthcare or related fields, with a strong understanding of medical terminology and effective communication practices applicable to patient care and clinical environments.
  • Experience coordinating with a variety of stakeholders, including employers, high schools, and government agencies.
  • Experience teaching in a community or technical college setting.
  • Demonstrated success in collaborative assessment and curriculum development.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development, including presentations or publications in the field of ESL.
  • Experience developing curriculum in career and technical education and/or English for Academic Purposes (EAP).
  • Proven ability to work effectively with a diverse population of students, faculty, and staff.
  • Experience with program-wide curriculum development initiatives.
  • High level of proficiency with learning management systems; experience with Canvas and the Microsoft Office Suite preferred.

Compensation Information

  • 12-month appointment paid annually.
  • Salary placement determined on credentials, industry experience, teaching effectiveness, and internal equity.
  • Compensation practices align with SLCC policy and support equitable placement.
