Job Summary

The purpose of Academic Advising at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) is to help students identify their educational and career goals, advise students about their pathway of study, and work with students to create academic plans that lead to successful completion.

The Assistant Director of Academic Advising, Health Sciences, is a professional position that reports to the Senior Director of Academic Advising to provide strategic and transformational leadership in academic advising in order to fulfill the mission of the College. This position will interact closely with the Dean, Associate Deans, and faculty from School of Health Sciences to obtain academic information for undergraduate and technical programs. The Assistant Director will also provide support and coordination for college-wide programs and initiatives related to support the holistic development and academic success of all students.

Assistant Directors In Academic Advising Do The Following

  • Oversee the hiring, training, and continued professional development of advisors within their assigned academic pathways.
  • Provide site supervision of Academic Advising offices and staff at one or more college locations.
  • Work closely and collaboratively with Academic and Student Services administrators to ensure quality and efficiency in delivery of academic advising services.
  • Participate in the leadership team in the development and enforcement of departmental policy and procedure.
  • Oversee departmental work groups to implement departmental strategy in achieving departmental and institutional goals.
  • Serve on college wide committees.
  • Assist the Senior Director in establishing and evaluating departmental assessments and managing functional budgets.
  • Serve as a liaison to and coordinate with academic departments to ensure students are provided consistent, accurate, and prompt advising services.
  • Assess the quality and success of academic advising resulting to make informed decisions regarding the continuous improvement of services and implementation of learning outcomes.
  • Manage and coordinate processes related to Academic Standards policies.
  • Act as liaison with curriculum office

Academic Advising at SLCC consists of four assistant directors, 60 full and part-time staff that include advisors and support staff, located at seven campuses/sites. Advisors have responsibility for a variety of services, including case management advising in a pathway, major/program advising, career exploration advising, transfer advising, academic standards intervention, limited curriculum review, early enrollment/concurrent enrollment advising, faculty support, and professional development.

This position is currently location at SLCC Jordan Campus, with possible travel between campuses. This is subject to change if needed. This an in person/office position.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

  • Advocate for all students.
  • Demonstrate effort to understand your individual and collective role in creating inclusive environments.
  • Promote equity through the identification and removal of barriers, facilitation of learning, cultivation of community, and empowerment of people.
  • Ability to work with English as a Second Language Learners and create process to help them transition to college programs of study.
  • Establish a rapport with students and interact with family members.
  • Abide by the ethical standards and guidelines for academic advising, including working ethically with confidential information.
  • Knowledge and understanding of SLCC organization, goals, and objectives.
  • Knowledge of SLCC policies and procedures. Interpret and explain college policies and procedures, including the Student Code of Conduct.
  • Knowledge of SLCC schools and departments. Knowledge of college enrollment procedures, college resources, and services (e.g., Registration, Financial Aid, Learning Resources).
  • Knowledge and understanding of educational and placement processes and interpretation practices. (e.g., ACT/SAT, CASAS, Accuplacer, CLEP, TABE, AP, etc.).
  • Demonstrate the aptitude to learn new systems and processes quickly, as needed. Demonstrate evaluation, originality, initiative, ingenuity, creativity, teamwork towards conflict resolution, and decision-making.
  • Lead discussions and make presentations to large and small groups. Assist with coordination and delivery of workshops and classroom presentations regarding academic advisement.
  • Knowledge and understanding of diverse student needs and challenges and demonstrate sensitivity and excellent interpersonal skills to work and interact with students, staff, and faculty.
  • Communicate effectively and appropriately, both verbally and in writing with a broad range of people. Prepare business correspondence and advising materials for print and digital media.
  • Knowledge of developmental academic advising theory including current advising literature and practices. Train others in academic/career advising techniques and pathway and program information.
  • Knowledge and understanding of student development theory and practices as it relates to advising students experiencing academic difficulties. Apply student development and career development theories to help students develop habits, behaviors, and mindsets necessary for success in a college and career environment.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • Two (2) to Five (5) years of direct, paid, full-time experience in academic advising, student success higher education departments, and/or vocational training programs.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience in academic advising or student services.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Five (5) to seven (7) years of direct, paid, full-time experience in academic advising, student success higher education departments, and/or vocational training programs.
  • Master’s degree in educational psychology, education, career counseling, student affairs, communication or related technical field.
  • Bilingual (read, write, and speak Spanish).
  • Leadership & Supervisory Experience in a college or university
  • Experience working with undergraduate or technical programs
  • Experience with technology platforms (i.e. Starfish/EAB, Banner, DegreeWorks and Canvas.)
  • Experience in case management and/or territory management.
  • Experience interpreting degree requirements, articulation agreements, and curriculum processes.
