Assistant Professor Welding

Job Summary

Under general supervision, prepare and teach college level Welding courses and labs such as Introduction to Welding, Safety, Blueprint Reading, Oxy-Acetylene Welding, Shielded Metal Arc Welding, Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW), Flux Cored Arc Welding (FCAW), Welding Process and Quality as well as other courses as assigned. This position may teach day, evening and weekend courses. All full-time faculty teach assigned classes established by the SLCC Full Time Faculty Handbook for Compensation and Workload and the Academic Freedom, Professional Responsibility and Tenure Policy in a manner that reflects the mission and values of Salt Lake Community College. This position may require to work flexible shifts including evenings and weekends. Tenure-track faculty participate in teaching, professional activities, and college service. All Faculty will maintain an on-site campus presence to encourage in-person relationships and create engaging, meaningful, and impactful learning experiences. Faculty are required to maintain professional boundaries with all SLCC students.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities & Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Essential Duties

• Follow the course curriculum outline, prepare and deliver lectures, labs and other course activities.
• Prepare and administer student assessments and evaluations.
• Keep accurate classroom records.
• Develops and maintains written syllabi/course outlines and course materials.
• Schedule and maintain office hours: announce/post office hours to students in all classes.
• Assist in program curriculum development.
• Assist with programmatic accreditation, program assessment, standards and accreditation.
• Program recruitment, outreach and service industry.
• Follow SLCC policies and procedures.
• Provide ADA accommodation as required.
• Attend and participate in college, program and industry meetings.
• Serve on various college and program committees.
• Remain current with new trends and developments in field through attendance at conferences, courses, seminars and/or workshops.
• Maintain required certifications.
• Apply OSHA standards relating to lab and site safety.
• Maintain inventory control of equipment, tools, and supplies required for classes and lab.
• Completes all required training.
• Advise students on program and/or course requirements.
• Demonstrate and support professional commitment to the Welding Technology profession.
• Demonstrate welding techniques and procedures consistent with industry and department practices.
• Teach and enforce safe practices using welding processes according to departmental policy.
• Willing to work flexible shifts including evenings and weekends.
• Other duties as assigned.

• Ability to stand before a class of students and deliver required subject matter.

• Proficiency with hand tools, power tools used by welders.

Minimum Qualifications

• Minimum six (6) years of professional field experience in the Welding Industry with the American Welding Society (AWS) Certified Welding Inspector/Certified Welding Educator (CWI/CWE) Certifications,
  
  

OR Minimum four (4) years of professional welding experience with Two (2) years of full or part time teaching experience in a trade related field and an Associate of Applied Science degree in Welding Technology or related studies.

Or Minimum of four (4) years of professional field experience in the Welding Industry and a Bachelors of Science (BS) degree in a related field.

• Ability to perform department welder qualification test using the following processes: OAW, SMAW, FCAW, GMAW, PAC, OAC.
  
  

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Welding Technology or related field from an accredited College or University.
• Two (2) years of full-time post-secondary teaching experience in Welding, or related field.
• AWS CWI/CWE Certifications related to specific classes being taught.
• Demonstrated competency with multiple instructional delivery methods (web-enhanced and face-to-face).
• Working knowledge of AWS-Sense Program.
• Ten (10), or more, years related occupational experience.
• Recent welding teaching and curriculum experience at the community college, or equivalent environments, including non-traditional settings that require professionalism, flexibility, excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Compensation Information

Faculty Compensation and Workload Handbook

Placement within the range is based on a review of the candidate’s education and credentials, discipline-specific experience, teaching effectiveness and competencies, and internal equity across rank and department. SLCC’s faculty compensation practices align with institutional policy and support equitable, consistent placement within approved ranges.

The base salary is a 9-month Academic Year appointment and paid over annual basis. Additional compensation may be available when teaching overload classes.

Summer Semester is paid at 23.5% of base for a full teaching load.
