What are the responsibilities and job description for the Lead Wood Finisher & Color Match Specialist - Cabinet Restoration (Paid Weekly, 401k!) position at Renew Medic by SMS?
Job Overview
We are seeking an elite, detail-driven Lead Cabinet Finisher to head our finishing department in Springfield, VA. This is not a basic production-line spraying job. This is an artisan-level role centered on high-end cabinet restoration, specialized pre-loss color matching of both stains and paints, and flawless execution.
Reporting directly to the owners, you will take full ownership of the finishing lab, manage inventory, and enforce strict safety and VOC compliance. You will collaborate closely with our Lead Builder and Lead Installer to ensure every project is completed on time and meets a near-identical match to original finishes. As our company rapidly scales, you will have the opportunity to build, train, and supervise your own dedicated finishing crew.
If you’re someone who thrives on ownership, takes pride in delivering high-quality work, and is eager to grow into a leadership role, this is the perfect job for you. As we scale, we’re committed to promoting high performers into management positions based on results, leadership, and initiative.
Key Responsibilities
- Master-Level Finishing: Prepare, clean, sand, repair, paint, stain, and glaze cabinetry components to pristine, pre-loss condition.
- Precision Color Matching: Utilize advanced color theory to produce near-identical matches for aged, damaged, and custom wood stains or paints. Ensure color consistency and finish quality.
- Equipment Mastery: Safely operate and maintain all specialized finishing equipment and tools, including spray booths, HVLP/airless spray guns, dust collectors, and power tools.
- Field Artisan Support: Occasionally deploy to field job sites to perform precision touch-ups, on-site repairs, cleaning, painting, re-finishing, and final color blending in customers' homes.
- Department Oversight: Manage chemical and coating inventory, track material needs and place orders for finishing materials proactively. Maintain cleanliness and organization of the finishing area of the warehouse.
- Safety: Ensure absolute compliance with all local safety and VOC regulations. Manage and reference Safety Data Sheets (SDS).
- Cross-Team Collaboration: Coordinate daily with the Lead Installer, Cabinet Builder, and General Manager to maintain an efficient production schedule. Support field operations when needed with cabinet installations and removals.
Qualifications & Requirements
- Experience: 5 years of dedicated experience finishing high-end wood surfaces, cabinetry, luxury furniture, or architectural trim carpentry. Experience operating spray systems and working within spray booth environments.
- Technical Artistry: Proven mastery in identifying wood species, grain patterns, and manually blending stains and paints to match existing finishes flawlessly. Strong knowledge of finishing materials, coatings, and application techniques.
- Safety / Regulatory Knowledge: Sound understanding of safety protocols, PPE requirements, and laws regarding volatile organic compounds (VOCs).
- Leadership Focus: Highly organized, solutions-oriented mindset with the desire to run an efficient department in a production environment, ensure high quality standards, and mentor future junior finishers.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to safely lift up to 50 lbs, work on your feet in a shop environment, and pass routine respirator fit testing.
