Project Accountant

About the Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented and highly collaborative Project Accountant to support financial operations across multiple heavy civil construction projects. This role works closely with Project Managers, Estimating, Payroll, and Accounts Payable teams to ensure accurate job cost tracking, billing, and financial reporting throughout the project lifecycle.
This position is ideal for someone who understands the financial structure of construction projects, including job costing, WIP tracking, and contract-based billing, and who can operate effectively in a fast-paced, high-growth environment.
Key Responsibilities
Project Accounting & Job Costing
- Set up and maintain project financial structures, including budgets, cost codes, and job cost tracking within the ERP system.
- Monitor job costs, track budget vs. actuals, and support financial forecasting for active projects.
- Perform Work-in-Progress (WIP) accounting and percent-complete revenue recognition.
- Assist in evaluating project profitability, including identifying gains/fades and financial risks.
Billing & Accounts Receivable
- Prepare and process AIA billing and unit price billing in accordance with contract terms.
- Ensure all invoices are submitted accurately and on time, including required documentation such as lien waivers.
- Track and follow up on outstanding receivables in coordination with Project Managers.
Change Orders & Financial Controls
- Manage and track change orders, including Extra Work Orders (EWO) and Force Account work.
- Ensure proper documentation, approval, and financial integration of all project changes.
- Maintain accurate financial records aligned with project scope and contract values.
Collaboration & Reporting
- Partner closely with Project Managers to review project performance and financial status.
- Lead or participate in monthly WIP meetings, providing insights into cost variances and project financial health.
- Communicate financial updates and risks to leadership, including executive-level reporting.
Procurement & Process Management
- Support and oversee the purchase order process, ensuring alignment with project budgets.
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and overhead analysis in collaboration with the CFO.
- Continuously identify opportunities to improve financial processes, systems, and reporting accuracy.
Key Qualifications
Required
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance.
- 5 years of accounting experience within the construction industry.
- Strong experience with:
- Job cost accounting
- Work-in-progress (WIP) reporting
- Percent-complete accounting
- Construction billing (AIA / progress billing)
- Ability to manage multiple projects and financial tasks in a deadline-driven environment.
- Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and data integrity.
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills across cross-functional teams.
Preferred
- Experience with construction ERP systems, ideally Foundation Accounting Software.
- Familiarity with HCSS tools (HeavyBid, HeavyJob, Dispatch, E360).
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and financial data analysis.
- Experience working directly with Project Managers and field teams in a construction setting.
