To perform repairs and maintenance work on parks, grounds, buildings and facilities and to operate various types of park machinery and equipment. Support Parks, Engineering, and Highway Departments with in-the-field surveying.

  • Perform maintenance and repair work on parks, grounds, buildings and facilities.
  • Operate equipment used in park construction and maintenance.
  • Required to plow snow and salt icy park roads and County facility parking lots.
  • Perform daily operator maintenance checks and preventative maintenance.
  • Move equipment from one project to another.
  • Report problems to dispatcher and management and receive instructions via 2-way radio.
  • Perform minor repair on machinery and equipment.
  • Complete surveying tasks for PW departments
  • Balance surveying and parks responsibilities seasonally.

Supervision Received: Receives supervision from the Parks Manager.

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year experience involving the operation of machinery, tools, and equipment used in park construction and maintenance.
  • Valid Wisconsin driver’s license (CDL preferred).
  • Prompt and regular attendance.
  • Knowledge/experience in tree care and maintenance.
  • Knowledge/experience in snow plow operations (pick-up/plow/salter).
  • Knowledge/experience in surveying and construction plans.
  • Knowledge of landscape development, grounds maintenance, comprehensive and turf management programs.
  • Ability to interpret construction plans related to surveying 
  • Pesticide/aquatic applicator certification or ability to obtain licenses.
  • General knowledge of building maintenance, plumbing, electrical.
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Ability to communicate and have good rapport with the general public, co-workers and subordinates.
  • Ability to work independently with a high degree of initiative and self-motivation.
  • Ability to maintain athletic fields.
  • Ability to operate vehicles and grounds maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to carry out written and oral instructions.
  • Basic knowledge of methods, materials and equipment used in related park maintenance.

Physical Qualifications

  • Continuous (67-100% of workday) hearing, use of far and near vision and exerting up to 20 pounds of force.
  •  Frequent (34-66% of workday) standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, climbing using legs and arms for support, ascending and descending ladders, balancing, bending/twisting, reaching, feeling and medium intensity handling and exerting up to 50 pounds of force.
  • Occasional (1-33% of workday) sitting, crawling, talking and exerting up to 100 pounds

Working Conditions

  • Continuous (67-100% of workday) exposure to moving vehicles and mechanical hazards.
  • Frequent (70-100% of workday) exposure to the outside with no effective protection from weather, extreme cold, and temperature changes.
  • Occasional (1-33% of workday) exposure to extreme heat, wet or humid conditions, noise, vibrations, heights above 12 ft hazards; exposure to fumes, noxious odors, dust, poor ventilation and physically confined work sites.

Equipment Used

Hand tools such as hammers, power tools, chainsaw, and shovel/broom; transportation vehicles such as an automobile and 35,000 GVW truck; park machinery, construction or building maintenance equipment; personal protective equipment, leather work boots, and hearing and eye protection; tractors, and a 2-way radio. Survey equipment.
