Position Summary:
The Benefits Compliance & Payroll Auditor is responsible for ensuring regulatory compliance, audit readiness, and operational accuracy across employee benefits and payroll programs for a high-volume manufacturing organization with approximately 5,000 employees across multiple locations and shifts. This role focuses heavily on benefits compliance administration, payroll auditing, and adherence to federal, state, and company regulations governing employee benefit plans.
The position partners closely with HR, Payroll, Legal, Finance, Benefits vendors, and external auditors to monitor compliance risks, conduct detailed audits, maintain documentation, and ensure accurate administration of health and welfare, retirement, leave, and payroll-related programs.
Essential Functions:
· Administer and audit employee benefits programs to ensure compliance with applicable regulations including:
· ACA
· ERISA
· HIPAA
· COBRA
· FMLA
· Section 125 regulations
· IRS and DOL reporting requirements
· Conduct recurring audits of employee eligibility, dependent verification, payroll deductions, and benefits enrollment accuracy.
· Review and reconcile benefits invoices and payroll deductions for medical, dental, vision, life insurance, disability, 401(k), HSA/FSA, and voluntary benefits programs.
· Monitor employee status changes, leaves of absence, terminations, and qualifying life events to ensure timely and compliant benefits administration.
Coordinate annual compliance testing and reporting activities including:
· ACA 1094-C and 1095-C reporting
· Nondiscrimination testing
· Retirement plan audits
· Open enrollment validation
· Maintain audit documentation and ensure readiness for internal and external audits.
· Support preparation and filing of required compliance notices and employee communications.
Payroll Auditing & Controls
· Audit payroll processing activities for accuracy and compliance with wage and hour laws.
· Review payroll transactions including overtime, shift premiums, garnishments, bonuses, retroactive pay adjustments, and benefit deductions.
· Ensure payroll practices comply with:
o FLSA
o State wage laws
o Multi-state payroll regulations
o Union agreements (if applicable)
o Internal controls and SOX requirements
· Investigate payroll discrepancies and partner with Payroll and HR teams to resolve issues promptly.
· Assist with year-end payroll activities including W-2 audits and reconciliation.
Compliance Monitoring & Risk Management
· Identify compliance gaps, operational risks, and process deficiencies.
· Recommend corrective actions and process improvements to strengthen internal controls.
· Monitor regulatory updates and communicate compliance impacts to HR and leadership teams.
· Assist with development and maintenance of policies, procedures, SOPs, and audit protocols.
· Support vendor management activities and ensure third-party administrators meet contractual and compliance obligations.
Reporting & Analytics
· Generate audit reports, compliance dashboards, and trend analyses.
· Track key compliance metrics, audit findings, and corrective actions.
· Prepare summaries and recommendations for HR leadership and Finance partners.
Education and Experience:
· Bachelor’s Degree in Human Resources, or related field, or equivalent education and experience.
· Familiarity with FMLA, ADA, HIPAA and other relevant HR Laws.
· Minimum 3 years’ experience in an HR Compliance/Payroll/Benefits Administration role required.t
· Experience in utilizing HRIS to administer benefits.
· PHR or SPHR preferred.

· Ability to bend, stoop, stand/sit for prolonged periods, move about production and warehouse facilities.
· Ability to travel occasionally, including internationally – travel required is minimal – less than 5%.
