A heavy civil contractor focused on public works projects is seeking a Controller to lead accounting and financial operations. This individual will oversee the close process, manage job cost and WIP reporting, and ensure compliance across payroll, union, and regulatory requirements.
This is a fully on-site position best suited for someone who is comfortable working hands-on within a lean, fast-paced environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and execute the month-end close process and produce timely financial statements
- Maintain general ledger accuracy, account reconciliations, and internal controls
- Prepare and manage WIP schedules, including revenue recognition in accordance with GAAP
- Oversee job cost accounting, including cost tracking and cost-to-complete analysis
- Manage Accounts Payable and Accounts Receivable functions and monitor cash flow
- Oversee certified payroll processing and public works compliance requirements
- Manage union reporting and related obligations
- Prepare financial packages for bonding, banking, and external CPA partners
- Support audit and tax preparation processes, including work paper development
- Identify and implement process improvements within the accounting system and workflows
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
- Significant accounting experience within construction, preferably heavy civil or public works
- Strong knowledge of WIP schedules and construction revenue recognition
- Experience with job cost accounting and project-based financial reporting
- Hands-on experience managing month-end close and financial statement preparation
- Familiarity with certified payroll and public works compliance requirements
- Experience with equipment accounting and depreciation
- Experience preparing reports for bonding companies and lenders
- Understanding of audit processes and working with external CPA firms
- Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment
Compensation
- $160,000 – $200,000 based on experience
