Role Overview
The Director of Design and Development is a senior leadership role responsible for overseeing the execution, coordination, and delivery of digital work across creative and technical teams. This role combines active team leadership with hands-on contribution to ensure high-quality outcomes and efficient delivery.
In addition to managing teams and delivery, this role serves as an individual contributor, directly supporting UX/UI design efforts and, where experience allows, contributing to strategy and development-focused initiatives. The position absorbs day-to-day leadership and execution responsibilities, allowing the organization to strengthen accountability and delivery.
We are looking for a full time freelancer for part time work, with the potential to grow into a full time position in the future.
Key Responsibilities
- Team Leadership & Management
- Directly manage creative and technical team members, providing leadership, coaching, and performance feedback
- Oversee team capacity, workload distribution, and resourcing across active initiatives
- Act as a primary escalation point for quality or performance-related issues
- Foster strong collaboration, ownership, and accountability across teams
-Support team growth through mentorship, clear expectations, and ongoing development
Design and Technical Work
- Contribute directly to UX/UI design efforts, including discovery, wireframing, design refinement, and experience validation
Step in as a hands-on contributor on complex, high-visibility, or at-risk initiatives
- Provide design and execution support during early project phases to help shape direction and feasibility
- Where applicable, contribute to strategy, technical planning, or development-related work based on experience and project needs
- Balance individual contribution with leadership responsibilities to support both quality and delivery
Delivery & Execution Oversight
- Partner with project management and operations to support delivery without unnecessary process overhead
- Maintain visibility into active workstreams and proactively course-correct as needed
- Ensure work aligns with organizational priorities and delivery standards
Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Serve as a connective leader between creative, development and operations
- Align teams around shared priorities, timelines, and expectations
- Participate in planning, resourcing discussions, and delivery strategy
Standards, Process & Continuous Improvement
- Establish and maintain clear execution and quality standards across teams
- Improve workflows, handoffs, and collaboration while keeping processes lightweight
- Support the evolution of tools, documentation, and best practices as the organization scales
- Drive consistency in how work is planned, executed, and delivered
Experience & Qualifications
- 5 years of experience in digital delivery, design, development, or operational leadership roles
- Experience managing cross-functional teams in an agency or multi-project environment
- Demonstrated ability to contribute hands-on while leading teams
- Strong understanding of digital project lifecycles and execution models
- Ability to balance strategic oversight with tactical involvement
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Intimate knowledge of Figma, and other design tools
