Construction Accountant / Project Accountant (Hybrid)
Location: Greater Washington, DC Area (Manassas, VA)Schedule: Hybrid (3 days onsite / 2 days remote)

The Role
We are seeking a detail-oriented and business-minded Construction Accountant / Project Accountant who thrives in a dynamic, project-based environment. This role sits at the intersection of accounting and operations, giving you visibility into project performance, cash flow, and strategic decision-making. You will be responsible for:
Project Financial Management
- Oversee project billing, including AIA billing, progress billings, and lien waivers
- Manage job costing and track budgets, actuals, and profitability across projects
- Prepare and maintain Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules
- Apply percentage-of-completion (POC) or completed contract revenue recognition methods
- Partner with Project Managers to analyze cost variances, risks, and margin performance
Accounting & Financial Reporting
- Maintain the general ledger, including journal entries and account reconciliations
- Prepare monthly financial statements and management reporting packages
- Monitor and forecast project-level and company-wide cash flow
- Track fixed assets, equipment, and depreciation schedules
- Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and construction accounting standards
Operational & Compliance Support
- Support internal and external audits
- Manage payroll processes, including certified payroll (if applicable)
- Ensure compliance with bonding requirements, retainage tracking, and subcontractor reporting
- Assist with budgeting, forecasting, and long-term financial planning
- Contribute to process improvements and help scale accounting operations as the company grows
What We’re Looking For
- 3–7 years of accounting experience, with strong exposure to construction or project-based accounting
- Solid understanding of:
- Job costing
- WIP reporting
- Revenue recognition (POC / completed contract)
- Experience with construction ERP systems (Vista preferred, but not required)
- Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel (pivot tables, lookups, financial modeling)
- Strong analytical mindset with the ability to translate financial data into business insights
- Excellent communication skills — able to partner effectively with non-finance stakeholders (PMs, operations)
- Experience in multi-entity or multi-state environments is a plus
- Knowledge of bonding, retainage, and subcontractor accounting practices
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required
- CPA (active or in progress) strongly preferred
