Industrial Torch Operator
Position Summary
The Industrial Torch Operator is responsible for safely operating oxygen-acetylene torches to cut, trim, and dismantle steel materials, structural components, and scrap metal. This position works in an outdoor or non-climate-controlled industrial environment and requires strict adherence to safety procedures.
Essential Job Duties
- Operate oxygen, propane, and/or plasma cutting torches to cut steel, pipe, plate, and structural materials
- Perform scrap processing, demolition cutting, and material downsizing as required
- Follow cutting layouts, measurements, and supervisor instructions
- Remove slag and clean-cut materials as needed
- Sort and separate metals by type and grade
- Assist with loading and unloading materials
- Perform daily equipment inspections and basic torch maintenance
- Identify and report equipment malfunctions or safety hazards
- Maintain a clean and organized work area
- Follow all company safety rules and OSHA regulations
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Prior experience operating industrial cutting torches preferred
- Ability to read a tape measure and follow basic measurements
- Basic knowledge of different types of metals
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Strong attention to safety procedures
- Reliable attendance and punctuality required
Physical Requirements
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb throughout shift
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. regularly
- Ability to work in extreme heat, cold, dust, and outdoor conditions
- Ability to wear required PPE including hard hat, gloves, face shield, respirator, and steel-toe boots
- Exposure to sparks, smoke, noise, and heavy equipment
Work Environment
- Industrial yard or manufacturing setting
- Non-climate-controlled environment, mostly outside in all weather conditions
