Who We’re Looking For
NorthRock Partners is seeking a Part-Time Payroll & Benefits Specialist (1099 Contractor) to provide support to our People Team. The ideal contractor is detail-oriented, organized, and skilled in payroll and benefits operations. This individual will work independently while collaborating closely with NorthRock’s Director, Total Rewards, to ensure accurate payroll processing, smooth benefits administration, and compliance with applicable laws and procedures.
About the Engagement
This part-time, contract-based engagement focuses on supporting the day-to-day execution of payroll and benefits-related processes. The contractor will assist with data entry, audits, reporting, and administrative support while maintaining strict confidentiality and professionalism. The role requires strong attention to detail, a high degree of accuracy, and the ability to manage multiple priorities with minimal supervision.
What You’ll Do
- Assist with semi-monthly payroll processing by verifying employee data, pay adjustments, and deductions.
- Maintain and update payroll and benefits records within HR systems.
- Support new hire enrollment, life event changes, and terminations in benefits systems.
- Coordinate with external vendors to ensure timely and accurate benefits updates.
- Respond to general payroll and benefits inquiries, escalating complex issues as needed.
- Assist with preparing reports and documentation to support audits and compliance.
- Help identify and support process improvements for greater accuracy and efficiency.
- Perform other contract-related tasks as assigned.
What You Bring
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 2 years of experience supporting payroll and/or benefits administration.
- Experience with HRIS or payroll platforms (UKG Ready preferred).
- Strong understanding of payroll processes, deductions, and compliance requirements.
- Exceptional accuracy, confidentiality, and attention to detail.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a part-time contract setting.

Contract Details
- Classification: 1099 Independent Contractor
- Schedule: Approximately 20 hours per week with flexible scheduling
- Location: Hybrid role based in Minneapolis, MN (remote flexibility available)
- Compensation: $30.00–$40.00 per hour, commensurate with experience and scope of work
- Benefits: This contract role is not eligible for NorthRock employee benefits or participation in company-sponsored plans

- Must be authorized to work in the United States
- Successful completion of a credit and criminal background check is required
Work Environment
This contract engagement may require occasional physical activity such as lifting or moving light equipment (up to 25 pounds). Most work will be performed at a desk or workstation using a computer. Flexibility for hybrid or remote work is available.
