Northfield Mount Hermon (NMH) seeks a full-time Utilities Operator to support the daily operation and maintenance of the school’s essential utilities infrastructure. This position plays a key role in ensuring the safe, compliant, and efficient functioning of NMH’s low-pressure steam plant, drinking water supply, and wastewater treatment systems. The Utilities Operator works under the direction of the Chief Engineer and designated section leaders and is essential to sustaining critical campus operations.

A Day in the Life:
The Utilities Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining campus utilities systems, including the steam plant, drinking water systems, and wastewater treatment facilities. This includes routine and emergency duties such as operating boilers, maintaining equipment, performing repairs, and troubleshooting issues. The operator works independently on weekends and holidays to ensure continuous operation. Tasks also include record keeping, adhering to safety policies, following SOPs, and responding to after-hours emergencies. Collaboration with other plant staff and adherence to environmental compliance standards are essential.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
Ability to qualify for and obtain a Massachusetts T1 and D2 Drinking Water Operator Certification
Ability to qualify for and obtain a Massachusetts M-3 Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator Certification
Must become state certified in both drinking water and wastewater operations within two years of hire
Valid driver’s license
Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and climb vertical ladders
Regular attendance and ability to work unsupervised
Preferred Qualifications:
1 year of experience in steam, drinking water, or wastewater operations
Experience with chemical handling, pumps and hydraulics, and practical electricity
Knowledge of environmental compliance laws and hazardous material handling
Skills in pipefitting, welding, instrumentation, and water analysis
Familiarity with computer-based statistical record keeping
Technical knowledge of fluid mechanics, industrial electricity, and control systems
