JOB DESCRIPTION:
Title: 4Th - 5TH Assistant Principal / Curriculum Coordinator (K-12)
Job Goal: Assists the Principal in providing instructional leadership to staff, including curriculum planning, review, and implementation; and professional development. Assists in the day-to-day building administration and the safety and welfare of students, staff, volunteers, and activities. Leads staff in implementing quality instruction. Ensures a safe, pleasant, and effective educational atmosphere, provides discipline as necessary, and enforces school policy. Assists the Principal in managing employees in the elementary school. Supports the Principal in setting the overall direction, coordinating, and evaluating the staff within the school. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsible for interviewing, making recommendations for hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; addressing complaints and resolving problems.
As Curriculum Coordinator: Design, evaluate, and update educational programs, standards, and learning materials to improve student outcomes.
Reports to: North Elementary Principal
Supervises: Teachers, support staff, student teachers, and volunteers as designated by the Superintendent.
Qualifications:
- Master’s degree in Educational Leadership or School Administration preferred
- Must hold or be enrolled in a program that leads to a Michigan Elementary Administrator’s Certificate
- Must hold a valid Michigan Teaching Certificate or have a minimum of three (3) year’s experience in Elementary Administration.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Principal will assist the Principal to:
- Implement the tenants of Professional Learning Communities.
- Manage all building staff and provides general supervision to students.
- Assign teachers to classrooms and students to classes.
- Create master schedule to effectively utilize available resources.
- Facilitate in-service training/professional development for staff
- Supervise extra-curricular activities
- Create and encourage a building vision.
- Direct the staff in addressing the needs of all students through differentiated instruction.
- Establish priorities for educational materials to meet the needs of students and prepares the School budget, works with the Business Manager on budgeting and purchasing.
- Work with Central Administration personnel to coordinate processes for the effective functioning of the school.
- Work with the Director of Special Education to assure the appropriate programming for special needs/at-risk students.
- Determines staffing needs and submits recommendations to the Central Administration.
As Curriculum Coordinator:
- Curriculum Development: Research and map K-12 curriculum frameworks to align with state standards
- Instructional Support: Oversee the training of teachers on new content, instructional strategies, and digital tools.
- Data Analysis: Evaluates students’ assessment data to identify gaps and update curriculum effectiveness.
- Resource Selection: Review, recommend, and manage the adoption of textbooks and educational technology.
- Collaboration: Work with administrators, teachers, and specialists to ensure cohesion across grade levels.
- Professional Development: Organize and lead workshops to improve teaching and subject matter expertise.
As directed by the Principal, the Assistant Principal/Curriculum Director
- Manages the physical plant in terms of safety and welfare of students and staff.
- Resolves staff problems and provides support to teachers
- Maintains the discipline and morale of students by carrying out the provisions of the Student Rights and Responsibilities in a consistent and fair manner
- Utilizes the parameters of all negotiated contracts
- Evaluates the performance and effectiveness of programs and staff
- Interacts with students in a constructive manner to encourage each individual to perform at their highest level.
- Possesses strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize a multitude of tasks.
- Maintains relations with parents, parent groups, and school volunteers and outside agencies.
- Participates in district-wide activities, in-services and committees, as appropriate.
- Implements policy and procedure changes from the Board, or the State and Federal level at the building level.
- Continual monitoring of student achievement
- Maintains current educational/administrative certificate.
- Instructional and curricular leadership through the development of appropriate programs and expectations.
- Ensure quality instruction is taking place in all classrooms.
- Other duties as assigned by the Principal.

Demonstrates awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to use a personal computer and related software.
