Position: Medical Technologist
Location: Deland FL 32724
Contract Duration: 6-month contract with possible extension
Shift Timings: Normal Business Hours
The Medical Technologist, Proficient (Lab) is responsible for performing complex laboratory testing and diagnostic procedures in accordance with established laboratory policies, procedures, and regulatory standards. This role ensures accurate and timely reporting of test results, maintains laboratory instrumentation, supports workflow efficiency, and contributes to process improvement initiatives. The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical expertise, critical thinking abilities, and the capability to work independently while maintaining compliance with quality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Laboratory Operations
- Perform complex laboratory testing procedures independently with minimal supervision.
- Analyze, interpret, and accurately report laboratory test results.
- Ensure specimen integrity and compliance with laboratory quality standards.
- Monitor daily workflow and assist in maintaining operational efficiency.
- Perform routine and advanced instrumentation maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Training & Team Support
- Train and mentor laboratory teammates and new staff members.
- Serve as a preceptor and conduct competency assessments for staff when qualified (6 years of experience preferred).
- Provide technical guidance and support to laboratory personnel as needed.
- Process Improvement & Compliance
- Identify opportunities for workflow optimization and process improvements.
- Assist in evaluating new testing methodologies and laboratory equipment.
- Support development, implementation, and compliance of laboratory policies and procedures.
- Participate in inspection readiness activities and regulatory compliance initiatives.
- Inventory & Resource Management
- Assist with inventory monitoring and ensure adequate laboratory supplies are maintained.
- Support resource allocation and workflow coordination to ensure uninterrupted operations.
Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology, Biological Sciences, or a related field required.
Experience
- 2–6 years of clinical laboratory experience preferred.
- Minimum 6 years of experience required to work independently without supervision.
- Experience in high-volume clinical laboratory environments preferred.
Technical Skills
- Basic computer proficiency, including Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and critical thinking skills.
- Ability to interpret laboratory data accurately and efficiently.
Licenses & Certifications
Required:
- Current State of Florida Technologist License in the related specialty.
- Current Florida Technologist License in Hematology or Multi-Specialty.
- Certification through a recognized laboratory certifying agency such as:
- ASCP
- AMT
Preferred:
Additional specialty certifications.
Work Environment
- Exposure to blood, body fluids, tissues, and other potentially infectious materials.
- Use of appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) is required.
- Compliance with all laboratory safety and infection control protocols is mandatory.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs with or without assistance.
- Ability to stand, walk, bend, stretch, stoop, and sit for extended periods.
- Manual dexterity required for laboratory instrumentation and computer use.
- Ability to distinguish colors when required for laboratory testing procedures.
