Position Summary
The Health Information Director is responsible for leading and managing all aspects of the Health Information Management (HIM) department. This role ensures the accuracy, integrity, and security of patient health records while maintaining compliance with regulatory standards. The Director oversees departmental operations including medical coding, record processing, data management, and information release, while collaborating with leadership and clinical teams to support organizational goals.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic leadership and oversight of the Health Information Management department
- Ensure accuracy, timeliness, and compliance in medical coding for acute and ambulatory services
- Oversee record processing, indexing, abstracting, transcription, and storage systems
- Manage release of information and ensure adherence to privacy regulations
- Maintain and enforce departmental policies and procedures
- Monitor data integrity and compliance with healthcare regulations and standards
- Oversee trauma registry and physician suspension processes
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders to optimize workflows and system performance
- Lead, mentor, and develop HIM staff
- Serve as the point of contact for all health information-related initiatives and compliance matters
Qualifications
Education:
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management, Health Information Science, or a related field (required)
- Equivalent plan to complete a Bachelor’s degree may be considered
Experience:
- Minimum 5 years of management or supervisory experience (required)
- Minimum 5 years of medical coding experience (required)
- Experience with HIPAA regulations (preferred)
Certifications:
- Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) – required
- Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA) – highly preferred
Licensure:
- Must meet applicable state licensure requirements
