ARS: The Assistant Research Scientist (G14) will perform essential public health laboratory duties related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing in infants, children, adolescents, and people of reproductive age, including clinical testing using serological and molecular test methods, assisting with the development and validation of new laboratory assays, laboratory maintenance and quality assurance activities, and assisting with surveillance and outbreak investigation activities.

RS1: The Research Scientist 1 (G18) will perform essential public health laboratory duties related to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) testing in infants, children, adolescents, and people of reproductive age, including clinical testing using serological and molecular test methods, development and validation of new laboratory assays, preparing standard operating procedures, and participating in surveillance and outbreak investigation activities.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

Assistant Research Scientist (G-14): Bachelor’s degree or higher in Natural Sciences and one year of post-degree professional research experience in an appropriate field.

Substitution: 30 graduate hours leading to an advanced degree in an appropriate field may be substituted for the required experience.

Research Scientist 1 (G-18): Bachelor’s degree in Natural Sciences and two years of post-degree professional research experience* in an appropriate field.

  • Substitutions: master’s degree in an appropriate field may substitute for one year of experience, and Ph.D. in an appropriate field may substitute for an additional year of experience.

Preferred Qualifications: The preferred candidate will have experience working with bloodborne pathogens and handling blood specimens for clinical testing; experience performing serological or molecular testing methods; experience preparing standard operating procedures and developing clinical tests or performing validation studies; proficiency in spreadsheets and databases, and excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Additional Comments

This position will require the incumbent to meet all Federal requirements for staff who perform clinical testing, including the educational requirements. Dependent upon the initial assignment or subsequent reassignment of this position satisfactory background checks may be required. Additionally, exposure to potentially hazardous substances may be involved with this position; the selected candidate may be required to wear personal protective clothing and equipment and may undergo pre-employment and/or periodic health evaluations and receive specific immunizations.

This position may require travel throughout New York State including overnights to areas not served by public transportation.

For new State employees appointed to graded positions, the annual salary is the hiring rate (beginning of the Salary Range) of the position. Promotion salaries are calculated by the NYS Office of the State Comptroller in accordance with NYS Civil Service Law, OSC Payroll rules and regulations and negotiated union contracts.
