Assistant Controller
The Assistant Controller supports the accounting and financial operations of a small to mid-sized organization. This role serves as the primary backup to the Controller and acts as a bridge between day-to-day transactional accounting and higher-level financial analysis and decision-making.
This position requires strong experience in project-based accounting environments, including job costing, project billing, and compliance. The Assistant Controller plays a key role in ensuring accurate financial reporting, maintaining internal controls, and providing timely insights to support business performance and project success.
Key Responsibilities:
• Assist with month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, job cost reconciliations, WIP schedules, and variance analysis
• Maintain and oversee general ledger activity
• Prepare financial statements in accordance with GAAP
• Manage job cost accounting, including cost tracking, budget-to-actual analysis, and variance reporting
• Support cash flow forecasting and daily cash management activities
• Oversee and assist with accounts payable processing, including checks and ACH transactions
• Support capital project tracking, including approvals and spend monitoring
• Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations
• Serve as backup support for payroll processing, including certified payroll when applicable
• Assist with reconciliation and payment of union-related benefits, as applicable
Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or related field
• 5 years of progressive accounting and finance experience, ideally within a project-based or construction environment
• Strong understanding of GAAP and job cost accounting
• Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel
• High attention to detail and accuracy
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Team-oriented with a willingness to support hands-on accounting functions as needed
Preferred Experience:
• 6 years of accounting experience
• Direct experience in construction or project-based accounting environments
• Exposure to reporting within larger or multi-entity organizations
• CPA designation
• Experience with ERP systems (construction-focused systems preferred)
• Familiarity with multi-state and/or union payroll environments
• Experience working with subcontractors, vendors, and project teams
Salary : $110,000 - $115,000
