Tool & Die Repair Technician - Heavy Metal Stamping

Location: Belleville, Michigan
Pay: $30.00–$38.00 per hour, depending on experience and shift

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Tool & Die Repair Technician with a strong background repairing heavy progressive metal-stamping dies in a high-volume automotive manufacturing environment.

This is a direct-hire opportunity—not temporary or temp-to-hire. Candidates must have hands-on experience diagnosing and repairing progressive stamping dies. Injection-mold repair, mold-setting, or die-change experience alone will not meet the requirements for this position.

Essential Responsibilities

• Perform daily maintenance, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and repair of progressive and metal-stamping dies.
• Respond to tooling problems directly on the production floor to minimize downtime.
• Diagnose die timing, alignment, feed, clearance, and part-quality problems during production.
• Identify the die station or component causing defects and complete the necessary repairs.
• Repair, replace, fit, and adjust damaged or worn die components.
• Perform die tryouts and verify tooling performance after repairs or modifications.
• Operate manual lathes, mills, surface grinders, and drill presses to manufacture or modify tooling components.
• Read and interpret blueprints, tooling drawings, specifications, and tolerances.
• Use micrometers, calipers, indicators, comparators, and other precision measuring instruments.
• Work with production, quality, engineering, and maintenance teams to resolve tooling concerns.
• Document repairs, preventive maintenance, tool history, and spare-parts usage in the PLEX ERP system.
• Maintain an organized inventory of tooling components and critical spare parts.
• Follow all safety procedures, including lockout/tagout and proper tooling-handling practices.

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of five years of dedicated tool-and-die repair or toolroom experience.
• Extensive hands-on experience with progressive metal-stamping dies.
• Recent experience supporting high-volume automotive stamping production.
• Experience troubleshooting heavy dies during active production runs.
• Strong knowledge of die timing, alignment, feed progression, clearances, and stamped-part defects.
• Proficiency with manual mills, lathes, surface grinders, and drill presses.
• Ability to read blueprints and work within close tolerances.
• Proficiency using precision measuring and inspection instruments.
• Ability to work independently and respond quickly to production breakdowns.
• Availability to work second or third shift.

Preferred Qualifications

• Journeyman Tool and Die Maker certification or completed apprenticeship.
• Experience with PLEX or another computerized maintenance-management system.
• Tool-steel welding or TIG welding experience.
• Experience with overhead cranes, die rigging, and heavy-tool handling.

Important Experience Requirement

Applicants must have substantial experience repairing progressive metal-stamping dies. Candidates whose backgrounds are limited to injection molding, plastic tooling, mold changes, or basic die setting will not be considered.
