Lead Mechanic

About the Role

We’re seeking an experienced Lead Mechanic to repair pumps, gearboxes, winches, marine windlasses, and similar rotating and deck machinery. You’ll lead jobs from teardown through assembly and testing, make technical decisions independently, and guide mechanics and helpers. Work takes place in the shop and at local customer sites, including vessels, shipyards, plants, and terminals.

Responsibilities

• Lead repair jobs from equipment teardown through inspection, reconditioning, assembly, and testing.
• Disassemble, clean, inspect, repair, and reassemble centrifugal, vertical turbine, split-case, positive-displacement, and other pumps.
• Repair and overhaul gearboxes, winches, anchor windlasses, capstans, and similar machinery.
• Measure shafts, bearing fits, bores, wear rings, clearances, runout, and endplay; compare results with OEM specifications.
• Identify wear, damage, and failed components, documenting findings with clear notes and photos.
• Install bearings, mechanical seals, packing, couplings, and wear parts.
• Troubleshoot, remove, install, and align equipment in the field, including startup support.
• Plan the work sequence, tools, parts, and staffing needed to keep jobs on schedule.
• Direct mechanics and helpers assigned to jobs and check work quality before equipment leaves the shop or site.
• Coordinate with machinists on parts requiring machining and confirm fits before final assembly.
• Communicate job findings and progress to management and customers as needed.
• Follow safety and quality procedures; support after-hours, weekend, or emergency work when required.

Qualifications

• 10 years of hands-on pump and rotating equipment repair experience, including lead or senior mechanic responsibilities.
• Ability to work independently in both shop and field settings.
• Extensive pump disassembly, inspection, reconditioning, and assembly experience.
• Experience with gearboxes, winches, marine windlasses, or similar machinery.
• Strong knowledge of bearings, seals, fits, clearances, and alignment.
• Skilled with precision measuring tools and able to assess whether parts should be reused, repaired, or replaced.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, drawings, and schematics.
• Professional communication skills, including with customers and Chief Engineers.
• Valid driver’s license; TWIC card or ability to obtain one.
• Ability to regularly lift or move up to 50 pounds and work in heat, confined spaces, and at heights.
• Marine or industrial repair experience is preferred. Heat exchanger and shaft alignment experience is a plus.

Work examples required: Applicants must be able to provide examples of equipment they repaired or jobs they led, such as photos with a description of their role, inspection records, measurement reports, or references who can confirm their experience and ability to work independently. This is a senior professional role, not an entry-level or apprentice position.
