Job Description
We're partnering with a top-tier engineering firm supporting major utility and renewable energy clients across the Pacific Northwest. Due to a surge in grid modernization, system hardening, and renewable interconnection projects, they are actively expanding their Substation team.This role focuses on the design and engineering of medium to extra-high voltage substations, typically ranging from 12kV distribution systems up to 500kV transmission-level infrastructure. You'll be involved in a mix of:
- Design and engineer AIS & GIS substations for utility and renewable projects
- Develop one-lines, three-lines, schematics, wiring diagrams, and physical layouts
- Perform protection & control design (relaying, SCADA, communications)
- Conduct short circuit, load flow, and coordination studies
- Support equipment specifications (transformers, breakers, disconnect switches, bus systems)
- Partner with civil/structural teams on layouts, grounding, and foundations
- Review drawings and calculations for quality and compliance
- Provide construction and field support as needed
- Transmission substations at 69kV, 115kV, 138kV, 230kV, 345kV, and 500kV
- Breaker replacements, bus reconfigurations, and capacity upgrades
- Protection & control upgrades and SCADA integrations
- Greenfield substation design (brand new builds)
- Brownfield upgrades/expansions (existing energized sites)
- Grid hardening and reliability improvements
- Renewable interconnections (solar, wind, battery storage)
The Successful Applicant
A Successful Substation Engineer Should Have
- 3-10 years of experience in substation design / power delivery
- Experience with HV/EHV systems (12kV-500kV)
- Strong understanding of substation layout P&C design
- Experience with AutoCAD, MicroStation, ETAP, SKM, or ASPEN
- Familiarity with utility standards (BPA, PGE, PacifiCorp) is a plus
- Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering (or related)
- EIT or PE preferred
- Competitive hourly pay ranging from $72.00 to $88.00 USD, based on experience.
