We are partnering with a leading engineering firm supporting major utility and infrastructure projects across the Southeast. Due to significant growth in grid modernization, renewable integration, and system hardening, we are seeking a highly technical Substation Engineer with hands-on experience in HV/EHV design (up to 500kV).
Job Description
- Lead and execute detailed engineering design for substations ranging from 12kV to 500kV
- Develop and review:
- Physical layouts (plan & section views, bus arrangements, equipment spacing)
- Electrical one-lines & three-lines
- AC/DC schematics & wiring diagrams
- Perform equipment selection and specification:
- Power transformers, circuit breakers, disconnect switches, CTs/PTs, surge arresters
- Conduct advanced engineering studies:
- Short circuit analysis
- Load flow & voltage drop
- Grounding grid design (IEEE 80)
- Lightning protection & shielding analysis
- Design protection & control systems:
- Relay schemes (SEL, GE, ABB)
- SCADA integration, RTU configuration, communication protocols (DNP3, IEC 61850)
- Coordinate closely with:
- Civil/structural teams (foundation design, steel structures)
- Protection & controls engineers
- Field construction teams and utility clients
- Support construction packages:
- Bills of material (BOM)
- Construction drawings & installation details
- Perform QA/QC reviews and ensure compliance with:
- NESC, NEC, IEEE, ANSI standards
- Utility-specific design standards
- Provide field engineering support:
- Site visits, commissioning support, troubleshooting, and as-built updates
The Successful Applicant
A Successful Substation Engineer (HV/EHV) Should Have
- Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering
- 5 years of substation design experience (utility or EPC environment)
- Strong experience with HV/EHV substations (69kV-500kV preferred)
- Proficiency with:
- AutoCAD / MicroStation
- ETAP, SKM, or CYME (system studies)
- CDEGS (grounding analysis highly preferred)
- Deep understanding of:
- Substation layouts (AIS/GIS)
- Bus configurations (ring bus, breaker-and-a-half, double bus)
- Protection philosophies & relay coordination
- Experience working with major utilities or ISO/RTO environments
- Competitive hourly pay ranging from $90 to $105 USD.
