What are the responsibilities and job description for the Transmission Line Engineer (HV/EHV) - Contract to Hire position at Michael Page?
- Pure engineering-focused role
- Hands-on work with PLS-CADD on 500kV lines
We are seeking a highly technical Transmission Line Engineer to support the design and analysis of overhead transmission systems (69kV-500kV). This role is 100% engineering-focused, with minimal meetings and no client-facing responsibilities-ideal for engineers who prefer deep technical work over external coordination.
Job Description
- Perform detailed transmission line design for voltages ranging from 69kV to 500kV
- Develop and review:
- Plan & profile drawings
- Structure spotting and alignment sheets
- Stringing charts and sag-tension calculations
- Conduct advanced engineering analysis:
- Sag & tension modeling using tools like PLS-CADD / PLS-CADD Lite
- Structural loading analysis (wind, ice, temperature per NESC)
- Clearance and grounding/shielding evaluations
- Design and specify:
- Transmission structures (steel poles, lattice towers, H-frames)
- Foundations in coordination with geotechnical data
- Conductor selection (ACSR, ACSS, ACCC) and OPGW
- Perform line routing and optimization considering terrain, environmental, and right-of-way constraints
- Support material takeoffs (MTO/BOM) and construction package development
- Execute QA/QC reviews to ensure compliance with:
- NESC, IEEE, ANSI standards
- Utility-specific design criteria
- Collaborate internally with:
- Structural engineers
- Substation and protection teams
- Provide limited field engineering support (as needed):
- Site visits, constructability reviews, and as-built verification
The Successful Applicant
A Successful Transmission Line Engineer (HV/EHV) Should Have
- Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Structural, or Electrical Engineering
- 3-7 years of transmission line engineering experience
- Strong experience with overhead transmission design (69kV-500kV)
- Hands-on proficiency with:
- PLS-CADD (required)
- POLE / TOWER or equivalent structure analysis tools
- Deep understanding of:
- Sag-tension theory and conductor behavior
- Structure loading (wind/ice) per NESC
- Clearance requirements and ROW constraints
- Experience producing engineering drawing packages for construction
- Competitive hourly pay ranging from $90 to $110
- Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision (MDV) benefits.
